5 Tips for a Successful Tree Farm Session this Holiday Season

cuddling up family picture - Indianapolis family photography

Christmas is coming… or at least Christmas tree mini sessions!! You guys love these sessions. All 4 days of tree farm minis were booked within 24 hours of sending the email. I’m excited you guys are so excited about these sessions!!

Here are my tips to you for a successful tree farm session.

  1. Dress in layers – I can’t stress this enough. It might be warm, but it will most likely be cold… very very cold as we typically do these sessions in late Nov and early December. As a reminder, the average temp in Nov is 40 degrees and Dec the average temperature is 30 degrees. Considering we shoot at sunset it’s likely going to be even colder then the average. That is cold, especially for little ones. You aren’t going to be able to have happy kiddos if everyone is cold. So please, please, please dress for the weather. This may hinder your style a tad but trust me it’s better to be warm then in that cute dress with no leggings underneath. We will reschedule if it’s raining, but not if it’s lightly snowing or just cold.
  2. Dress for the location – I really like reds/blacks/greens (think Christmas colors) or orange/red/brown (think Fall colors). There are lots of combos that could work, but I would probably try to stay away from bright floral type colors. Layers and textures always look good. You do also have access to the styling tool to help you pick clothing for your family. If you booked a session and didn’t receive that link feel free to reach out via email and I’ll send it your way.
  3. Meeting location – The sessions are done at Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown, IN. I’ll send you an exact meeting location about a week before you session. But the tree farm is about 50 minutes north of Indianapolis. Be sure to know where we are meeting and allow yourself enough time to arrive on time. It may sound like a bit of a drive, but this tree farm is stunning and is SO worth the drive!!
  4. Use the restroom before you leave – It’s a farm and they have port-a-potties. Sure you can use them, but do you really want to? Enough said.
  5. Have fun – Seriously, family pictures should be fun! We are going to play, smile, laugh and have a great time (even if it is a short time).

I can’t wait to see all of you this year for the Tree Farm Mini Sessions!!

I’ve been photographing little Lydia since her birth. So it’s only fitting that I photographed her 1st birthday party.

This Circus themed 1st birthday party had everything that you would expect to see a circus.

Are you ready for an epic 1st birthday party? If so, check this one out!

Below is the Ring Master (the birthday girl’s dad) welcoming you to the Big Top.

Super Bowl XLVI Pictures – Indianapolis, IN

Typically I shoot pictures of people. I really enjoy capturing emotion and relationships in people. However, the Super Bowl happens to be happening in my home town – Indianapolis, IN. Since I know Indianapolis inside and out, I thought it would be a shame if I didn’t snap a few pictures during this once in a life time opportunity.

How can you not love these larger then life roman numerals?! To understand how big these really were, look at the little dots on the ground. Those are people.

Indianapolis has lots of food trucks that roam the streets. They are kind of like ice cream trucks for adults. They don’t make themselves easy to find by playing music. You typically have to hunt them down by following the trucks on Twitter. During the Super Bowl they were are conveniently in one place – lined up around the circle. This made it super easy to grab a tasty bite of food!

Book Reading at the Rathskeller

I had the pleasure of photographing the book readings of Nicole Ross and Katrina Willis at the Rathskeller. These two both told very touching stories that had the whole audience captured.

The Ripple Card

These photos are from the initial launch of the RippleCard. The purpose of the RippleCard is to pass the card on to someone while doing something nice for that person. In turn, the next person will do the same for someone else, thus creating a ripple effect of acts of kindness, which we refer to as Ripples.

Everyone has the power to change the world.

I love the message behind all of this. Check out Michael Cheatham’s website for the RippleCard at!

GSCMI Conference

These are pictures from the Spring ’09 Global Supply Chain Management Initiative Conference put on by Kranneret. This was my 4th and final conference I have photographed. Unfortunately, I’m graduating and will no longer be able to take the pictures for them any longer. It was a great learning experience though!
