Adding baby #2 is exciting… and a little chaotic. I get it. You’re tired. Your toddler is adjusting. And you might be wondering, “How will this even work?” As an Indianapolis newborn photographer, I’ve worked with tons of families in this exact season—and yes, a newborn session with a toddler can still be beautiful. You just need the right approach.
As an Indianapolis maternity photographer as well, I often meet families before their newborn sessions—sometimes even during their maternity shoot—so I get to know toddlers early and help them feel comfortable ahead of time.
Recently, I photographed a family of four with a brand-new baby and a two-year-old big brother. Spoiler alert: big brother wasn’t all that interested in photos. That’s normal. And it didn’t stop us from getting a mix of snuggly, fun, and real moments.
Here’s what I want you to know before your newborn session with a toddler:
1. Toddlers Don’t Need to Sit Still
They won’t. And I’m not expecting them to. I work around toddlers by staying flexible, moving fast, and making it fun.
2. It’s OK if They Say “No”
I’ve got tricks. Lots of them. Every toddler is different, but I’m good at reading kids and figuring out what works. Whether it’s a game, a break, or a snack—I’ve got options.
Before the session even starts, I talk with parents about what they think their toddler can handle. I have several pose and setup options, ranging from super simple to more involved. If parents already know their toddler might not be up for much, we’ll stick to easier sibling poses.
And if the older sibling really isn’t into it? No problem. Sometimes, I’ll have them pose with an empty box or stool—no baby involved—and then Photoshop the baby in later.
There are so many ways to get that perfect image. But my favorite will always be the real deal—when big sibling is snuggled up close and actually interacting with baby. That’s the magic.
3. We’ll Keep Things Low Pressure and Relaxed
You’ve got a lot going on. I won’t add to the stress. We move at your family’s pace. If we need breaks, we take them. If your toddler wants to run laps, I’ll roll with it. The best images happen when everyone feels comfortable—especially the little ones.
Before your session, I always encourage parents to hype it up in a fun way. Instead of saying, “Let’s get this over with,” try something like: “We’re going to have so much fun today! I know this lady who’s super fun, and she’s going to take our pictures.” The energy you bring matters. If you’re stressed or pressuring your toddler to perform, they feel it. Let’s flip the script—let them be themselves, and I’ll capture the magic.
4. You’ll Still Get Family Photos
Even if it feels like chaos in the moment. I know how to work in quick bursts, change the pace, and capture the split-second smiles in between.
5. Candid > Perfect
A toddler hugging baby for half a second? That’s gold. A tickle fight with Dad? Even better. These images show connection, not perfection.
