I love learning about new cultures and traditions and this was very new to me. I had the opportunity to photograph Cleo’s 1st Birthday party which was done in the traditional Korean way. A traditional Korean birthday is called a Dol or doljanchi. In Korean tradition the first birthday is a big deal. It was originally a celebration of living though the first year of life and beating childhood diseases. Today it is a celebration and blessing to the child. The party is celebrated with family, friends, and church members who sing, bless, and pray with the baby.
The family started with pictures in the traditional Korean attire and then they moved into the 1st birthday party.
The lovely table you see is also a traditional Dol table. The table is piled high with foods to symbolize the prosperity of the child. Everything on the table has a different meaning.
These are traditional Korean Dol lanterns. There were all hand made with different foods.
The detail on these things was incredible.
There was a bit of singing and the pastor read some scripture.
The rope that this grandmother is presenting her granddaughter represents a long life.
Such a fun party! It was great to experience the party as an outsider. It was my first Dol, but I hope it isn’t my last!
Stay tuned for Cleo’s cake smash session as well.
