Creek Side Mini Sessions – Summer 2017

So last week my old college roommate and I took our boys to visit a local creek and let the boys play. Since we are both photographers we decided to take pictures too. It was so much fun and I’m obsessed with how the pictures turned out! The light was beautiful and the boys had fun. So I wanted to offer this up to you guys as mini sessions.

These images are super casual. You will want to come prepared to get wet and play in the rocks, sand and water! We might get a few pictures of everyone looking at the camera but the goal of the session is to capture everyone playing and interacting at this beautiful location!

creek side mini session in Carmel, IN - KristeenMarie photography

The cost for the session is $200 ($100 non-refundable deposit due to book and remaining balance due the day of your session) and includes 20 minutes of shooting and at least 15 images. Your images will be delivered via online gallery where you can download all the images. The location is in Carmel. Exact meeting details will be sent a few weeks before your session.

Here are a few things to note about these sessions:

Best Places to Shop for Clothing for Your Family Pictures

where to shop for clothing for photography sessionYou may have seen my recent post on tips to look your best for your outdoor photography session. This is kind of a continuation of that post. This list of stores will help you out when shopping for any type of outdoor photography session – engagement, maternity, or family photography sessions.

I’m by no means an expert on this topic, but here are my recommendations. These are places I like to shop and that my clients have purchased clothing from. When purchasing outfits for you session be sure to try to follow the guidelines I’ve outlined in my previous what to wear for family pictures post.

Zara – This is my favorite place for little boy clothes. They have great suspender pants and adorable neutral toned clothes. They also have cute little girl clothes too. Seriously everything is cute.

H&M – Great shop for kids and dad. You can get all the staples here and a items with a little flair (like the adorable boys pants with built in suspenders – seriously adorable!). Their clothes run big so be sure to size down for pictures.

Madewell – Women’s clothing beautifully made. These are clothes you invest in, but they will last you. Some of my favorite wardrobe staples/favorites are from here.

Blush Fashion Street Couture – If you want to dress your session up a bit here are some great options for women. I love the tulle skirts (I bought one from here for my maternity session), sequence shirts/dresses, and maxi dresses.

Boden – You can dress the whole family in Boden (but it’s a bit expensive) but the kids stuff is especially cute. Be sure the check the clearance section for dresses for mom.

Zulily – Keep you eye on Zulily for boutique clothing at discounted prices.

Rue LaLa – Designer clothes at discounted prices. Do a search for maxi dress and you can find lots of options women. Maxi dress look great all women.

Gap and Gap Kids  – Great for the basics, but be careful. Be sure to follow my tips on clothing and avoid anything that is neon or has logos or characters on it.

Tutudumonde – The dresses here are for little girls. They are to die for. However they are very pricey.

Anthropologie – This is a great place to shop for women. They have some visually interesting clothing with great textures. Be sure to check the sales section as it can by pricey.

Dottie Couture – This is a little boutique in Indy. So you can go there an try things on (or just buy online). They have lots of adorable outfits for women.

Joyfolie – So much beautiful stuff here for girls and women. Be sure to check out the shoes too!

Borrowed Boutique – Did you know you can rent designer kids clothing for a fraction of the cost of buying it?! The best part is that the rental boutique is right here in Indy (Fishers) so you don’t even have to pay shipping costs. If this is the route you want to go let me know as I have a small discount you can use. The have clothes for boys and girls. The little girls dresses are to die for!!

Rent the Runway – This is similar to Borrowed Boutique, but Rent the Runway is for women (not kids). If you want a designer dress without the designer price tag you can always rent a dress for your session. This is a tad risky since you won’t be able to try it on. However, the risk could pay off big! Twice a year Rent the Runway sells their used dresses. You can get some stunning dresses at a great price. Even though the dresses are used they are still in great condition.

The Zionsville Flower Company –  If you are looking for fresh flowers for your hair or a flower halo/crown be sure to call the Zionsville Flower Company. They offer crowns and hair pieces. Fresh flowers add a lovely whimsical feel to a photo session! The average cost for a flower crown is $42. However, contact them directly for more info and pricing.

Is there somewhere you like to shop for your outdoor photography session that didn’t make this list? Leave a comment below and let me know!

10 Tips to Looking Your Best at Your Photography Outdoor Session – Tips on what to wear for your family, engagement or maternity pictures

Clients often ask me what they should wear for their outdoor session. It’s hard to give them an answer that will easily fit in an email. So I decided to write a whole post about my recommendations for outfits for outdoor photography session. The 10 points below address clothing. However, if you look at the bottom of the post I have some suggestions on make-up and some tips specifically for maternity sessions. Also, if you are looking for recommendations on where to shop for clothing for your photo shoot you can find a whole separate post on that here.  So if you are interested in either topic be sure to keep scrolling to the end of the post. what to wear for your outdoor photo session

  1. Coordinate outfits – Choose colors that work well together, but that aren’t the same. You can even mix and match prints with solids. The key is to make sure that the colors you are working with go well together. If you are unsure what colors to wear consider choosing a color pallet that would look good in your home. Everyone’s preference is different, but I personally like grey, tan/cream, blush and whites together. I also really like mixing blue into that same palette.

  2. Don’t put everyone in the same outfit. It’s best not to put everyone in the same outfit (think white shirt and blue jeans). Instead put everyone in different shades of blue and the same color or complementing color. The more shades of the same color you add the more visually interesting the wardrobe will become. This rule goes for twins too. Twins can be dressed in matching outfits without them being exactly the same.
  3. Avoid neon colors – Neon colors can change skin tones and don’t look flattering in images. It’s best to avoid neon colors in all attire.what to wear for maternity session - Indianapolis maternity photography
  4. Think layers and textures – Layers and textures add visual interest to images. Layers can be added by adding a sweater, scarves, vest, suspenders, etc. Textures can be added by choosing an outfit with textures, jewelry, lace, flowers to the hair, belts, fun tights etc.child photography outfits - great idea for outfit
  5. Wear clothing that fits well – This is especially true for children’s clothes. It’s very tempting to buy clothing that children will grow into. However clothing should fit well/snug. You should even consider sizing down in clothing sizes. If clothing is baggy, they will look baggy and unkempt in the pictures. Large clothing also does not flatter your figure. It’s also important to try your clothing on before the day of your shoot.
love these outfits - neutral tones
  6. Make sure you feel good – It’s okay to go a little out of your comfort zone when choosing clothing for your family pictures. However, the clothing should reflect you and your family’s sense of style. You want to look like you in the pictures and that won’t be the case if you choose something that you would never wear again. Choose something that flatters your body and that makes you feel good. This is especially important for the adults. You should wear something you feel good in. You can even start with your favorite outfit/dress and then work everyone else’s outfit around your attire.
family outfits for outdoor photography session
  7. Feet – Don’t forget your shoes and socks. You will likely be doing some walking during your shoot so it’s important to choose shoes you can walk in. However, it’s also important to make sure your shoes look nice. Wedges are a great look for women and you don’t have worry about them getting stuck in the grass. Your child shouldn’t be in Mickey sneakers, Crocs, or neon colored shoes. No one should show up to the session in sneakers. If you have shoes that require socks make sure that your socks are appropriate as they may show when you sit on the ground. Know that during the summer months it’s completely acceptable to do some bare feet shots!
outdoor family photography - how to pick your outfits - Indianapolis family photographer
  8. A few things to avoid – Avoid anything with visible logos. This tends to be distracting and dates the images quickly. Don’t get a haircut the week before the session to avoid that freshly cut look. Don’t have everyone wear the same outfit/color. Don’t wear your Fitbit or other large watch that doesn’t complete your look. Don’t try outfits on for the first time the day of your shoot.
what to wear for engagement pictures - cute but casual
  9. Consider your backdrop – If your shoot is in Spring in a green field of grass then you probably want to avoid also wearing green. Keep your backdrop in mind when choosing outfits.
  10. Be flexible and comfortable – The day of your shoot something is bound to go wrong. It’s okay – that’s life! Make sure your kids aren’t in clothes that will make them want to get undressed before they even get to the shooting location. Also make sure your outfits are weather appropriate. If you or your kids are too hot or cold during the session it will be visible in the images. It also wouldn’t hurt to give yourself more time then you think you need to get ready… Just in case you need a quick Target run for that one thing you forgot about.

The above tips are about clothing for your session. But your make-up is just as important!
Here are a few tips to help you with your makeup on picture day…

  • It’s okay (and encouraged) to use makeup for your session. I recommend using slightly more then you wear on a daily basis. If you don’t normally wear make-up consider having someone do your makeup for you. You can have this done rather inexpensively at somewhere like a department store beauty counter, the MAC store, or Ulta Beauty. If you are looking for someone to come to your home to hair/make-up let me know as I have a great stylist who will come to your home to do this (Her name is Katie and she is fantastic. I have her do my hair and makeup before any family shoot we do! She also helped me put together this section of the blog post – thanks Katie!).
  • You may want to consider adding naturally looking false lashes (so not huge chunky false lashes). They can make all the difference is naturally enhancing your look. My favorite false lashes are the Ardell 110 Naturals. They are available at most drug stores, are easy to apply, and are very inexpensive (around $5.) They add a bit of length and lots of fullness without looking like you’re wearing falsies.
  • Your foundation and eye shadows should not have shimmer or glitter. These pigments reflect light and don’t translate well in photos. This includes glitter, shiny powers, or lotions/fondations with an SPF in it.  Mattes are the way to go!
  • Remember to highlight your eyes and cheeks! This will add dimension and will keep your face from looking too “flat.”
  • You will be photographed from many different angles. Be sure that your foundation blends well on your neck/chin line.

Bonus: A few tips specifically for a maternity session

For maternity sessions the goal is to show off that baby bump. So be sure to to wear something that flatters the bump. Maxi dresses tend to look great. If you are wearing a dress or shirt that isn’t form fitting consider adding a belt to the outfit above the belly. Don’t wear black as it’s a slimming color. Try not to wear sold white as it’s hard to see definition in white. All the other rules above still apply! 🙂

Double Bonus: If you are looking for some shopping inspiration I’ve also written my recommendations on where to shop for your shoot. I hope you will find that helpful too!

14 Highlights from KristeenMarie Photography in 2016

2016 has been a FANTASTIC year for a number of reasons. It’s been full of ups and downs but I would have to say that there were way more ups then there were downs. 2016 will forever be remembered as the year I welcomed my first baby into the world. So even though I didn’t shoot as much as I have in past years, I’ve accomplished so much more than just the sessions. I took three months off of shooting to create a human and it was amazing.

It’s hard to narrow down my favorite things about my job, because I’m convinced that I have the best job ever! But here goes… here are a few highlights from this year…

14. 31 Cake Smash Sessions – Every cake smash session is unique. I pride myself on creating a custom experience for each baby which includes a cake and backdrop to match their birthday theme. These sessions are so much fun for me, the baby, and the parents watching!!

13. 7 Engagement Sessions – Engagement photography is always fun! We get to focus on the couple and create images that represent their love for each other. I love picking locations that have meaning to the couple. Even though I took most of the Spring (the most popular season for engagement photography) off this year to have a baby I was still able to squeeze in a few brides-to-be! This year was full of lots of love. Indianapolis engagement photography

12. Introduction of Video – I’ve started surprising clients with little videos of their session. This is most common for birth sessions, but I’ve been known to do it for all the different session types. I’ve now added this as an option to add on to any session. If you are interested in adding a video to your session just let me know! I love making these.

11. A Live Proposal – I’m always super excited to be able to capture huge milestones in my clients life. It doesn’t get much more exciting the being able to capture the a live proposal! These guys are long time clients and I was also able to capture their wedding later on in the year. You can see the whole proposal here.

10. 6 Fresh 48 Sessions – A Fresh 48 session is a session that is done in the hospital within 48 hours of a baby being born. This is a great session for those who aren’t comfortable with birth photography, but still want to capture the tiny-ness and emotion of the arrival of their new baby. These sessions are always fantastic as they are full of so much joy and emotion.

9. 13 Beautiful Baby Bellies – I love pregnancy so much! The body is such an amazing thing and pregnancy lasts for such a short time! If you are looking for an Indianapolis maternity photographer in 2017 be sure to let me know! I would love to photograph your baby bump. Indianapolis maternity photography

8. 33 Family Sessions – Almost all of these families are past clients. One of my very favorite things about my job is getting to watch families grow. I get to capture all these memories for families year after year and that makes my heart so happy!Indianapolis family photography - KristeenMarie Photo

7. 25 Milestone Session – Being able to watch and capture all these children’s growth over their first year of life is a wonderful thing. I love being able to capture all these fun milestones in their lives while building relationships with the babies and their families.

Studio Milestone Sessions

6. 9 Stunning Weddings – I’m always so honored to be able to photograph a couple’s wedding. For me, a wedding is like being able to capture the love story of each of these lovely couples. Weddings are a huge time commitment and due to this I only take a very limited number of couples each year. However, I find each wedding to be super rewarding. If you are looking for an Indianapolis wedding photographer be sure to reach out!

5. 62 Newborn Babies – It’s no secret that I love photographing these squishy beautiful babies! This year the studio was full with 60 tiny fresh faces. 25 of these babies were siblings of past clients. I love watching all these families grow!! Almost all of these babies were photographed when they were younger then 14 days old. That’s a lot of very tiny fingers and toes! If you are looking for an Indianapolis newborn photographer be sure to let me know. I would LOVE to have your little one in my studio this year.

4. One Special Senior Session – I’ve been volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana for the last 7 years. I’ve been matched with my ‘Little Sister’ the whole time. This year my little sister graduates from high school. That also means she graduates from the Big Brothers program. That doesn’t mean our relationship ends, but it does mean that she will be a little harder to see on a regular basis once she starts college. I’ve so glad I was able to photograph her for her senior pictures. These photos will always be a reminder all of our time together. I don’t normally do senior photographer, but for her I made and exception. Here is the whole session.

3. Birth Photography – Birth is truly an AMAZING thing. I can’t in words describe it. Maybe that is why I enjoy photographing it so much. Every birth I photograph is so different from the last. Even though they are all different they are all leave me in awe of the human body. Each birth I photograph leaves me wanting to photograph another one. In 2016 I photographed two births. But I love it so much that I’ve already got 4 on the books for 2017 and I’m excited to get a few more (but not too many!) on the books. I just LOVE births. <3 So let me know if you are looking for an Indianapolis birth photographer.

2. Photographing my Sister’s Engagement – One cool thing about being a photographer is being able to capture special moments in the lives of your loved ones. It was a joy to be able to photograph my sister’s engagement pictures. My sister and her fiance are both beautiful people both inside and out and I hope she feels that when she looks through her pictures. I couldn’t be more excited to attend their wedding (don’t worry, I won’t be photographing it) as my sister’s maid of honor this Fall.

Indianapolis Engagement Photographer

1. Photographing My Own Newborn – Hands down, the biggest and most exciting event in 2016 (and maybe my whole life) was welcoming my own little one into the world. I just love this little dude to pieces. I was so excited to do my own newborn pictures. However, I’m going to have to say that photographing your own newborn is way harder then photographing someone else’s’ baby. But I’m so glad I was able to capture this time in my little guy’s life.

Welcome to the world, baby

I couldn’t have done any of these things without the help of all of my WONDERFUL clients. I can’t say thank you enough for supporting my small business and allowing me to capture all these phases of your lives. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Professional Gear of a Newborn & Wedding Photographer: What’s in my camera bag?

professional photography gear in camera bagI get asked often about my equipment and what I shoot with. So here it goes. Here is all the professional level gear in my camera bag.

Camera Gear

  • Canon 5d Mark III – This is my camera body that makes the magic happen and I love it!
  • Canon 5d Mark II – This is my back-up body because you never know what will happen.
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L – This is great for newborns and when I want a really shallow depth of field (ie fuzzy backgrounds). I like this lens and I won’t be getting rid of it any time soon but I don’t love it. I know a lot of photographers swear by prime lenses, but I’m not one of them. In case you don’t know, a prime lens is one that has a solid piece of glass in it. So it doesn’t zoom but you can get a sharper image because there is only one piece of glass.
  • Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L – This is my work horse. If something happened to this guy I would have to replace it IMMEDIATELY. I get nice clean sharp images (even in low light) and it allows me to zoom without moving my feet. For me zoom is super important during weddings and while shooting active kiddos.
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS – This lens is amazing. It produces super sharp images with the most beautiful bokeh (blurry backgrounds) out there. I prefer this lens during the wedding ceremony and I always try to grab a couple portraits with this lens as well.
  • Canon EF 100mm F2.8 L IS USM Macro – This is another prime lens. This lens is a macro lens which means it is great for capturing small details like baby features and wedding rings. I use this lens every shoot for detail shots.
  • Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT – I have two of these. I prefer natural light however flash is a necessary evil. These guys suite me just fine. The neat thing about these flashes is that they have wireless radio transmission which means that they “talk” to each other and my camera. This allows me to do things like backlighting.
  • Canon 580EX II – This is my back-up flash.
  • Black Rapid Straps – These straps are not the most fashionable straps, but they sure are practical! They allow me to easily use both my hands on anything (think posing a newborn baby) and then still have easy access to my camera. The straps are also great when I’m shooting weddings as it allows me to easily hold two cameras at once (which means two lenses). They are also super comfortable for those long days of carrying around heavy equipment.

As you can probably tell, I take great pride in investing in professional level camera gear. I don’t own every lens and gadget under the sun. However the equipment that I do own is top of the line and works for exactly what I need it for.

Fun Stuff – I always keep a few fun things in my bag.

  • Chalk Boards and Chalk – Yes, I have more than one chalk board in my bag. You never know when they will come in handy. These are fun for any type of session engagements, kids, families, etc.
  • Scrabble pieces – they are so much fun! It doesn’t matter if it is a wedding, family shoot, or what.
  • Elmo – Elmo sits on my lens and the kids love him.
  • Finger puppets – You can take pictures and wear them at the same time and kids love them!
  • Kiddo treats – most of the time I keep Teady Grams in my bag, but sometimes kids get lucky and will find gummy bears. I’m not above bribing.
  • Rechargeable Batteries – I have LOTS of rechargeable batteries in my bag. If you haven’t heard of Eneloop rechargeable batteries then you need to check them out. They are affordable and work fantastically!

I can’t talk about what is in my camera bag without talking about the camera bag itself, because I LOVE my camera bag! I’ve got the JuJu bag by Kelly Moore. It is cute, functional, and holds EVERYTHING I need for a session. It weighs a ton, but it makes every session into a good workout.

15 Highlights from KristeenMarie Photography in 2015 – Indianapolis Photography

I’m going to have to say, 2015 was a fantastic year! I had the opportunity to meet lots of new clients and I was able to continue to photograph and build relationships with many previous clients. Total in 2015 I photographed 206 sessions! That is crazy (good crazy). A huge thank you to all my clients for your support and for allowing me to capture these important times in your lives. You guys rock!

So without further ado, here are my top highlights for 2015!

15. 35 Milestone Sessions  – It’s no secret that I love to photograph newborns. However, I also love watching my newborn clients grow over their first year of life! Offering “grow with me packages” (3-5 sessions throughout baby’s first year) allows me to be able to build a relationship with my clients throughout their little one’s first year. Babies change so much during year one and every baby is different. These sessions keep me on my toes and it keeps me in touch with the developments of so many cuties! Look at all these adorable faces:

Indianapolis child photographer

14. Two In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Sessions – I clearly don’t do a ton of these sessions. However when I do them, they are always very personal to the client since I’m doing them in the client’s home. When I do these types of sessions I don’t bring props or external lighting. I just use whatever I find around the client’s home. It’s always a fun challenge when I arrive at a new home. In 2016 I hope to do more of these. I’m offering them as a half price session add-on when you book an in-studio newborn session with me. The great thing about the in-home newborn session is that they don’t have to be done within the first 10 days of baby’s life (unlike the in-studio newborn sessions).

in-home newborn photography in Indianapolis

13. Eleven Engagement Sessions – No two engagement sessions are ever the same. It doesn’t matter if the couples choose the same location because each couple has their own love story that is uniquely theirs. I try to capture this for them during their session. I really enjoyed getting to know all 11 couples over the last year and helping them tell their love story with Indianapolis engagement photography!

Indianapolis engagement photography

12. Eleven Stunning Expecting Mothers – Pregnancy is a very emotional time in a mother’s life. The 9 months goes by so quickly! Capturing this time in these beautiful mother’s lives is so rewarding. Pregnancy is beautiful and so are each and every one of these expecting mothers!

Indianapolis maternity photographer

11. Two Proposals – I’ve photographed a few dozen proposals at this point and I still get super nervous before every session! I only get one shot to capture this very special and emotional time in these couple’s lives!! These two recently engaged couples did not disappoint. They were both very sweet moments and a huge kudos to these guys for thinking ahead to hire a photographer to capture this once in a lifetime moment!!

Indianapolis proposal Photographer

10. One Puppy Cake Smash – I did my first puppy cake smash a little over a year ago when my fur baby (Rosie the mini labradoodle) turned one. So when Rosie’s cousin turned one it was only fitting that she have a cake smash session too! Let’s be clear, I don’t do these for clients. However, it’s fun to do them for the fur babies in my life! Meet Willa the bulldog and her cousin Rosie.

Puppy cake smash session

9. 45 Family Sessions – That is a lot of families! The thing I love most about all theses families is that most of them I’ve been photographing for a least two or more years. I do love meeting new clients, but even more then that I love building relationships with previous clients and being able to watch their families move from one stage of life to the next!

Indianapolis Family Photographer

8. Three Fresh 48 Sessions – I offer Fresh 48 sessions in Indianapolis. If you haven’t heard of this type of session before, it’s ok. It’s a newer type of session. Basically I come to your hospital room within 48 hours of you having your baby. This allows me to capture those very raw and emotional first moments of your baby’s life. These sessions are so real and emotional for everyone and I would love to do more of them in 2016. So I’m going to be offering them as a half price add-on to any in-studio newborn session or grow with me package. Let me know if this is something you are interested in for 2016.

7. Thirty Messy Cake Smashes – Cake smash sessions are always the icing on the cake (pun intended) to my grow with me packages. When the little ones turn one we give them a cake, a custom designed backdrop and let them have some fun! It’s always a good time to see each child’s reaction.

Please note that I didn’t take the image below. For privacy reasons I’m unable to share the images that I take for these clients.

5. New Studio – To say I’m excited about my new studio is an understatement! It’s twice as big as my old studio and it’s the prefect space for me. I still haven’t gotten around to taking pictures of the space but I do have some fun pull back shots below that show the studio in use. Don’t mind my mess… being creative is a messy job. 🙂

Why you get digital files when you work with KristeenMarie Photography

If you have worked with me in the past, you know that about two weeks after your session you will receive an online gallery with all your edited digital files. Then a short while after that you will also receive a jump drive with all your edited digital files as well.

Offering the digital files is a business choice that I’ve made. I’ve made this chose because I want you to use the files in the way that you want to use them. I want you to print the images over and over and over again. I want them to be all over your home. I want you to share them via social media. I want you to love and use your images the way that you see fit!

That being said, here are a few things to note about what you will receive and how you should proceeded:

  • When I say you will receive all your edited digital files, that doesn’t mean that you will receive all the images that I took during your session. Trust me, you don’t want them all! I’ll go through and pick the best of the best and those will be the ones included in your online gallery and on your jump drive. Every session is different, so I can’t give you an exact number of images that you will receive. However, I’m an over shooter so you will be getting a good healthy number of final images.
  • Don’t forget to back up your images. Yes, I do store your images for you in two separate places – online and on the jump drive. However, it is recommended that you also save the files somewhere else. I do not promise I will archive your images forever.
  • Be sure to print your images. I do highly recommend using a professional printer! This means that taking your images to somewhere like Walmart, Costco, CVS, or Walgreens is not encouraged. These places will give you varying levels of print and color accuracy. Please use a professional printer. When you receive your online gallery you can print using that site. If you want to use somewhere local I highly recommend Roberts Camera.

Below is what you will receive in the mail after your session. Included is the jump drive and the print release.

USB Memory Direct Drive for Photographer

I also want to give a shout out to the awesome vendors that made this cute custom package possible.

USB Memory Direct – This is where the jump drives are from. These guys were great to work with! They were able to match the exact Pantone color in my logo for the jump drives. I’ve got a stock piles of jump drives from these guys and I just love them!

Tiny Daisy Etsy Shop – This is where I get the cute USB bags.

Moo.com – This is where I get the printed products you will find in the package.
