What just happened? 2022 A Year In Review

2022 was a great year! Personally, we welcomed our 3rd and final addition to our family, baby Luka. Professionally I photographed 191 sessions. When I added up all the sessions that number shocked me, as I took off 3.5 months for maternity leave in there!  I’m not going to lie, finding the work life balance this year was a struggle, but I’ve got some ideas on how to fix it moving forward and I can’t wait to photograph even more families next year.

Here is a recap of my 2022 sessions!

Two In-Home Lifestyle Sessions

Lucky for me, both of the in-home lifestyle sessions included the family pups! Oh how I love a good pup and baby shot. These two fur babies were just the sweetest too! Please, hire me to come to your home to photograph your family for an in-home lifestyle newborn photography in Indianapolis. I would love it even more if the session included your 4 legged friends. While I love working with newborns in the studio, I also love the variety that in-home sessions offer.

22 Milestone Sessions

One of the best parts about my job is being able to build relationships with clients. I adore watching families and kids grow. Milestone sessions really allow me to build those relationships and capture that growth.

Special Sessions for My Kiddos

Taking pictures of my own kiddos isn’t always easy. Let me tell you… taking pictures of your own kids is way harder then taking pictures of other people’s kids! That being said, I still try to take the time to take special pictures of my littles because I know I’ll regret it later if I don’t. Each kid gets a special birthday session that they get to help dream up and then I also try to do a fun Christmas card.

13 Maternity Sessions

Pregnancy is such a joyous time! It may not always feel great, but I assure you it looks phenomenal. I adore capturing women in all their baby bump glory! The excitement is evident in everyone of these sessions. Thank you to all these women who allowed me to be their Indianapolis maternity photographer!

45 In-Studio Newborns Sessions

It’s no secret, newborns are my favorite!! All of these babies are beautiful in their own ways and photographing each and everyone was an honor. I can’t count the number of hours I spent shushing, or how many times I was peed or pooped on. But those numbers don’t matter. What matters is the beautiful art I was able to provide or each of these families that they will have for a lifetime. It’s an honor to be an Indianapolis newborn photographer and to be able to capture each one of these babies!

2 Fresh 48 Sessions

The hospitals have had restricted visitors for most of the year. So it’s no shocker that I haven’t been able to photograph a ton of Fresh 48 sessions. However, I sure do miss it!! Maybe next year is the year for Fresh 48 sessions. What do you think!?

22 Cake Smash Sessions

Cake Smash sessions are a labor of love. Each of these sessions take a ton of planning, crafting, building and time. I enjoy the creative process as it’s an outlet for me. Seeing these all together in one picture is a great reminder of all those sets I’ve built over the last year. Being an Indianapolis cake smash photographer is my thing and I love it!

81 Family Sessions

I love all of these families!! Every.Single.One of them. Seeing them all together gives my heart such joy!!

The fact that I was able to have a baby, take 3.5 months off of work, and still photograph 81 families kind of blows my mind! Most of these families are past clients and being able to see them year after year is the biggest joy of my job. Thank you everyone for allowing me to capture your families year after year and allowing me to be your Indianapolis family photographer! I hope you love your pictures as much as I love seeing all of you year after year.

4 Steps to Create Timeless Birth Announcements

Birth Announcement - LukaFew things are more special than having a baby. It’s such a joyful occasion, and one you should share with the many important people in your life. After all, the only thing better than having a happy event is sharing that happiness with the people you care about. Here’s how to share the birth of your newborn with your loved ones.

Since I recently went though the process of creating birth announcements I thought I would share some tips with you. And since the announcements have already gone out I’ve also shared a picture of the announcements with you.

1. Make a list

The first thing you should do is make a list of everyone you want to send the announcements to. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and in-laws are all people who should receive announcements. Then you start to branch out with your list. Extended family, such as aunts, uncles, and cousins should also get sent announcements. If you have a big family, it’s a good idea to double check with a parent to make sure you didn’t forget someone. Friends and coworkers can also get announcements, but if you’re going to send announcements to more than one coworker, you may want to consider making sure everyone on your team gets one too. You don’t want to cause hurt feelings in the work place by not including everyone.

2. Decide on a theme and color scheme

Next, you’ll want to decide on a theme and color scheme for the announcements. Light blue and pastel pink are always classic choices for baby announcements. Pink flowers or sketch florals look great on cards for girls. For a boy, you can have stars of a blue background, or use an animal themed template. For a more unique color scheme, you can use light green or yellow whether you are having a girl or a boy.

3. Hire a photographer

You can’t have birth announcements without some baby photos. Make sure you find a photographer experienced with newborn photography. Some photographers only offer sessions in their studio, others are more flexible and will travel to your home (fun fact – I offer both options!). Newborn photos are ideal for birth announcements, and these types of photos are best taken within the first few weeks of your baby’s life. Photographers can have limited availability. They need time to go through each of the photos, edit them, and get them back to you. A narrow time frame for newborn photos, coupled with potential scheduling conflicts, means that you should book your newborn photographer before baby arrives. Typically I tell clients to book in your 2nd trimester. This ensures that you can get quality newborn photos on your birth announcements. If you are in the Indianapolis area I would love to be your Indianapolis newborn photographer.

4. Order birth announcements

Finally, it’s time to order the announcements. Double check your list of recipients to make sure you get enough cards. Have photos taken of your baby by an experienced newborn photographer. Then find a birth announcement design you love, and customize it. Basic Invite has many wonderful card designs that are all completely customizable. From birth announcements to bridal shower invites and everything in between, they’ll have the perfect card for you. You can edit the card’s font and color scheme with hundreds of different options to choose from. Your birth announcements will be beautiful and completely unique.

And that’s it! You now have everything you need to create beautiful birth announcements you’ll treasure for years to come. Remember to double check your list, decide on the right color scheme, find a photographer you can trust, and order your announcements. Congratulations to you and your family on their new addition.

2020 Highlights from KristeenMarie Photography

I’m sure everyone can relate… what a nutty year. I didn’t see this coming and I’m sure you didn’t either. I’m not going to lie. It was hard. Very hard. In April and May I had to completely stop shooting and then after that I only did outdoor sessions for a few months. We didn’t have childcare and I became a full time stay at home mom who wasn’t able to leave the house. It was HARD on so many levels. I didn’t know when I would be able to work again (and I so desperately wanted to). I didn’t know what our childcare situation would look like if I was able to go back to work (we just weren’t okay with sending our kids back to daycare). Basically my personal and professional world was rocked!

But you know what?! We figured things out as a family and I made some changes to the business and it ended up being a great year. We figured out our new normal and I think we are better off for it!

Here are some of my highlights as an Indianapolis photographer from 2020! These are in no particular order.

1. 1st time in the sunflower fields

This summer I had the opportunity to photograph two days in the sunflower fields and it was magical! You better believe I’ll be doing it again this year. I can’t wait!! The dates for these sessions depends on when the field is blooming. So I can’t open up booking until the farm knows when the flowers will likely bloom. If you are interested in these sessions be sure you are on my email list because I’m sure they will book up super fast this year!!

2. 75 beautiful families

One of the biggest joys of my job is being able to watch and document families grow year after year. The fact that so many of my clients come back every year for pictures with me means so much! Being an Indianapolis family photographer is the best and I adore each and everyone of these families!

3. One magical proposal

Being able to document a proposal is nerve wracking every single time. But I enjoy the rush and appreciate the opportunity to be able to capture such a big milestone. This gorgeous couple did not disappoint when it came to this downtown Indianapolis proposal.

4. Behind the scenes video and photography

Before COVID hit and having an extra person in the studio or not wearing a mask was something we even though about I had two local photographers come and take some video/photos of me in the studio. It’s always weird being on the other side of the camera but I’m so grateful for both these ladies and their lovely work. Shaindel Kramer and Kelli White – you guys are the best!!

5. Outdoor newborn session

You guys showed up big time this year for the outdoor newborn sessions and I’m obsessed! In a normal year I typically get one or two families who are willing to brave an outdoor newborn session with me. But when COVID hit and the only option was to do them outdoor you all did them and they where phenomenal! If you or someone you know is expecting a summer baby, let’s do their newborn session outdoors! These images are stunning. Did you know if you do an in-studio newborn session you can add a mini newborn outdoor session to your package? It’s the best of both worlds!

6. 62 studio newborn photography session

Studio newborn sessions are what I’m most known for and they are probably my favorite sessions to shoot. I love getting in my newborn cuddles! To have this many people trust me with their brand new babies means the word to me. I hope to see even more in 2021! Thank you for all for allowing me to be your Indianapolis newborn photographer.

7. Seven maternity sessions

I adore pregnancy (well I personally don’t love being pregnant, but other people being pregnant is the best!) and I think pregnant women are in one of their most beautiful states. I cherish being able to capture this times in the lives of these families. If you are even on the fence about doing a maternity session please reach out to me and let me know. You won’t regret it! And a huge thank you to all these families for allowing me to be their Indianapolis maternity photographer!

8. A gender reveal photography session

This was a 1st for me and I loved it! This couple couldn’t have the gender reveal party they had hoped for due to COVID. They still wanted to celebrate so they did a gender reveal photo shoot with a smoke bomb. I’m going to add gender reveal/birth announcement shoot to my packages for 2021. So keep an eye out for that!

9. Two Fresh 48 sessions

This one makes me a little sad. Remember, when I could go to the hospital and photograph births and Fresh 48 sessions. Ya – I don’t get to do that anymore. I get it, but it still makes me sad. Before COVID kicked me out of the hospitals, I was able to get in one Fresh 48 session at an Indianapolis hospital. Then I had one mom who booked a Fresh 48 session and still wanted to do it at her home. She still wanted those photos of her kids meeting for the first time. I was totally game and it was a great solution! I hope one day things will go back to normal, but until then enjoy this last in-hospital Fresh 48 session.

9. Two weddings and 3 engagement sessions

It’s no surprise, I don’t shoot many weddings these days. Which means I don’t shoot many engagement sessions. But each one I do shoot has a special place in my heart.

weddings and engaement photos

10. Bring on the cake!

In 2020 I shot 29 cake smash sessions. That’s a lot of cake!! Each session was unique and each baby was beautiful and full of personality. I love coming up with these custom sets and I hope to do even more cake smash sessions next year. Bring me all those babies!!

11. My baby’s cake smash session

Speaking of cake, my little lady gets her own highlight. I adore taking pictures of my kids each year on their birthday and this one was extra special because she was one. Brynn cake smash session was inspired by her nursery and I adore it!

12. Jack’s 4th birthday shoot

I can’t share Brynn’s pictures and not share Jack’s! Jack celebrated his 4th birthday in style with his balloon session. This was also my only shoot in the month of April!

4th birthday photoshoot - balloon backdrop

13. One in-home lifestyle newborn session – I only did one in-home lifestyle newborn session this year, but it was for one of my favorite couples so I’m not complaining one bit!

In-home newborn session

14. 23 milestone sessions

I love all of my grow-with-me package clients! Seeing all these babies every few months is such a joy.

sitter session poses - lots of sessions

What a fun and crazy year! I’m not going to lie, I don’t want to repeat 2020. However, I think I made the best of it and I look forward to seeing all of you (and hopefully some new ones too) amazing clients again next year. Thank you for allowing me to be your photographer and document the lives of your family!!

Behind the Scenes for a Newborn Photography Session – Indianapolis Newborn Photographer

You may have seen a while back (a LONG while back at this point – months before COVID was even a thing that we knew about) I did a model call for an Indianapolis newborn photography session. I was looking to update my website with some images of me working. So one of my local photographer friends came a took some pictures of me while I was shooting. It’s good for me to be on the other side of the camera once in a while. I prefer being behind the camera but at this shoot at least I got to be behind the camera and in front of the camera all at the same time!

This shoot was extra fun because I got to choose all the set-ups. Normally I ask the clients for input but since this was a model call all the decision making was up to me. So I tried a few new things – the heart bowl with a backdrop on  top of it and a St. Patrick’s Day set-up.

I hope you can see from the pictures how much I truly love my job. I love each and every little baby that comes into the studio. I adore capturing these tiny humans with all my heart. And I hope to make art that your family will treasure for a lifetime.

Please know that this session was done long before COVID hit – I’m just now getting around to sharing. Things do look a little different in the studio due to COVID. If you are interested in reading about our COVID practices in the studio you can do so here.

Sunflower Mini Session – Indianapolis Photographer

This was my first year doing these sunflower mini sessions and I’m officially obsessed! You can bet I’ll be doing them again next year!! I didn’t even know where to start when sharing these images. There were so many stunning families and so many stunning images.  The sunflowers make for such a beautiful background and the perfect opportunity to update your family photos.

COVID-19 & Changes in the Studio – KristeenMarie Photography

With the studio re-opening on the horizon, I thought I would hop on to give you some additional information on how things are being handled in the studio.

Please know that I’m doing what I can to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. That being said there is always a risk when interacting with others. My goal is to reduce the risks as much as possible.

Here is what I’m doing and what I’m asking of you…

  • Studio Sick Policy – If you or anyone in your home is sick or has been sick with the last 48 hours please let me know and we can reschedule your session. These is no fee to reschedule your session. I will also provide you with the same courtesy.
  • Guest Policy – Please only bring the people being photographed. No extended family or guests will be permitted in the studio.
  • Shoes – Please remove your shoes upon arriving at the studio.
  • Hand Washing – When you arrive after removing your shoes, please wash your hands. If anyone coughs, sneezes, or uses the restrooms I ask that you also wash your hands. I will be doing the same.
  • Masks – I will be wearing a mask throughout your session. You are welcome to wear one as well when you are not being photographed.
  • No Drinks/Snacks Provided – I will not be offering drinks, snacks or treats at this time. If you have little ones, I would encourage you to bring a treat for them (just in case we need some bribery!). You are welcome to bring your own water or other needs.
  • Air Flow – If the weather is permitting, the windows in the studio will be open to increase air flow.
  • Cleaning – Everything that baby touches will be washed/sanitized between uses. The studio will also be sanitized between clients. This was always something that has been done in the studio, but we are taking this very seriously and will be extra thorough.

If for any reason you are not comfortable coming to the studio you do also have additional options.

Option one – I’m currently able to do all sessions outdoors – newborn, cake smash, milestones, family, etc. I’m actually really loving doing these sessions outside! It’s possible to do social distancing outdoors (staying 6 feet apart) so spreading the virus is reduced significantly.

Option two – You also have the option to do your session in your home. This is a great option for newborns!

Option three – If none of these options suite you I’m happy to refund your deposit.

Please know that I’m doing everything I can to keep clients happy and safe during this difficult time.

You Are My Sunshine Cake Smash and Some Behind the Scenes Images

This handsome birthday boy is the youngest of three siblings. I’ve been photographing this family since the youngest was born and this family has been an absolute joy to work with! I’m a little sad to see this guy turn one because now I won’t get to see this wonderful family as often.

Little Benjamin had a You are My Sunshine themed 1st birthday cake smash session. It was super fitting for her personality because he is just a little ray of happiness. He wasn’t super into the cake (but you wouldn’t know it from the pictures). But he was as happy as could be just exploring the set.

I also used this session for some promo pictures (stay tuned for more on that) so there are a few behind the scenes images in this post as well.

Thanks for celebrating your first birthday with me Benjamin! You were a little ray of sunshine and I hope that carries though past this first year. Happy first birthday, Benjamin.

If you are interested in 1st birthday photography or any other types of photography that I offer please feel free to reach out! I’m an Indianapolis photographer and I would love to photograph your family’s milestones.

Top 10 Highlights of 2019 from KristeenMarie Photography

2019 was another great year – both personally and professionally. Personally I had my 2nd child so I took a 3 month maternity leave. Professionally I still photographed 131 kids and families from around the Indianapolis area, even though I took a quarter of the year off! So it’s been a busy year but I wouldn’t have it any other way and I loved every minute of it!!

So here is my countdown for the top 10 highlights in 2019:

10 – Families, families and more families – In 2019 there were 74 families that I had the joy to photograph! It’s no secret that one of my favorite things about my job is being able to watch families grow. Most of these families I’ve been photographing since they have had a newborn in the studio. Some of them I’ve even been photographing since their wedding day! Yes – some of them are new families too and I love those sessions just as much. Thank you to all 74 families for allowing me to be your Indianapolis family photographer and I hope to see all of your lovely families again in 2020!!

Family pictures - Indianapolis families from 2019

9 – Watching those Babies Grow – This year there were 27 little ones (and their families) in the studio for milestone sessions. Look at all those cutie little faces.  Milestone sessions are so much fun because the kids personalities start to come out and they are interactive with the camera.

8. Milk Bath – If I had to pick one session from the whole year that was my favorite this would probably be it! This was my first time doing a milk bath session. This Mama was celebrating her 1-year of breast feeding with this milk bath session (yes – she is taking a bath in milk and flowers). The light was perfect, the subjects loved every moment and I’m obsessed with how the images turned out!

7 – Focus on my Family – Taking pictures of your own kids is hard! I hire someone to take our pictures every year and I recommend you do the same! However, I still try to get the kids in the studio a few times a year just to say I tried. I normally try to have fun with them during these sessions so that they don’t end up hating it.

6 – Beautiful Baby Bumps – I think pregnancy is stunning on everyone! Every time I get an expecting mama in front of the camera something magical happens… she glows happiness. I just love capturing this time in the lives of my clients! Here are the 11 expecting mamas from 2019. I would love to do twice as many Indianapolis maternity photography sessions in 2020!!  If you are expecting, I  would love to photography a maternity session for you.

5 – Messy messy birthday babies – Every baby has a different reaction to cake and every reaction is priceless! Happy birthday to all these cuties. There were 34 cake smash sessions in 2019. Each one was different and unique for the one-year-old. This year I even added an adult cake smash! There were 33 one year olds photographed and one 30 year old! So fun!

1st birthday cake smash photography in Indianapolis by KristeenMarie Photography

4 – Family Videos – I’ve done videos with my Fresh 48 and birth photography clients for years. However, this was my first year offering video as an add-on to a family session. Can I just say I’m obsessed?! Families can add on a video to any full session. I hope to do even more of these next year.  Pictures are priceless but so are the videos!

.
.

3 – Birth and Fresh 48 – If I had to pick one session type to photograph all the time it would probably be births and Fresh 48 sessions. Thank goodness I don’t have to pick, but I just love these intimate moments that I have the joy of capturing during this incredible time of the lives of my clients. These images are always full of so much emotion, joy, and raw-ness. If you are considering hiring and Indianapolis birth photographer don’t think twice. Just do it. You won’t regret it.

2 – So Many Beautiful Newborn Babies – I just love having all these little ones in the studio. Newborn photography is my bread and butter. I’m most comfortable in my studio, with a tiny little one. It’s my happy place, my creative outlet, and my way of creating memories for you. I’m grateful for each and every one of these tiny humans that come to visit me. Thank you to each and everyone of these 47 families for trusting me to be your Indianapolis newborn photographer this year.

1 – Welcome to the World Baby Brynn – I know I’ve said it already, but it’s kind of a big deal. This year I welcomed little baby Brynn into the world. She has been a joyful addition to our family and we love her beyond what words can express. After she was born, I was able to photograph this beautiful girl in the studio. It was no small feat as I didn’t feel great, my hormones were all over the place, and I was sleep deprived. But the time/effort spent in the studio were so worth it. I’m glad I have these memories of our beautiful newborn girl.

I can’t thank each and every one of my clients enough for another fantastic year I have loved being your Indianapolis photographer. You guys make what I do possible. I appreciate your love and support. It’s an honor to be able to capture this time in your lives. I hope to see all of you again in 2020!
