Hey there! I’m your friendly neighborhood Indianapolis photographer, and I’ve had the privilege of capturing some truly heartwarming milestone photography sessions recently. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to blog all the milestone sessions that I photograph, but I thought I would combine a few sessions and share some insights to help you make your milestone session as smooth and magical as those I’ve had the pleasure of photographing.
Expect a Fun Hour: First things first, our milestone photography session will usually last about an hour or less. That’s just the right amount of time to capture those adorable moments without making anyone feel rushed. Babies are unpredictable so we do move quickly, but it’s all in an attempt to avoid a meltdown.
Outfits Are the Spice of Life: For milestone sessions, I often recommend having 2 or 3 outfits ready for your little one. And, here’s the fun part – I’ve got a ton of outfits in the studio you can use! My sitter session wardrobe is full of rompers, diaper covers and little dresses that show lots of baby skin and pull the focus to baby. Plus, if you’d like, we can sneak in a family setup with one of those outfits.
You don’t NEED to bring any outfits for the sitter session as you could entirely use my studio wardrobe for baby. But if you want to purchase some special outfits here are a few of my favorite lines:
- Hey Little Diddle – This is a local boutique in Carmel and they have the cutest outfits for both boys and girls. I love all the early neutral colors and lots of textures.
- H&M – I recommend online as the local store doesn’t have a huge kid selection. But online offers a ton of adorable rompers that I adore for little boys.
- Zara – So many cute rompers for boys and girls!
- Amazon – If you are in a pinch, you can always find some inexpensive items quickly from Amazon.
Rest for the Little Star: A well-rested baby is a happy baby! So, try to ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep or a refreshing nap before our session. It’ll help them stay cheerful throughout the shoot.
Snacks and Sips: Kids are full of energy, and sometimes they need a little refueling during the session. Feel free to bring some snacks or an extra bottle just in case. We want everyone to feel comfortable and content.
Dress for Success: If you’re thinking of a family picture, it’s a great idea! To keep things looking cohesive and stunning, I recommend that parents and siblings wear simple and comfortable solid-colored clothing. Opt for a neutral palette to complement the studio and make the kids pop – creams, whites, gray, or peachy tones work like magic. Just a little tip, though: let’s avoid solid black and neon colors; they tend to steal the spotlight!
Your Special Touch: If you have any special items you’d like to incorporate into the session, bring them along! Think adorable hats, blankets, booties, headbands, or anything from your child’s nursery that holds sentimental value. These personal touches add extra warmth to your photos.
Timing is Everything: I totally get it; getting everyone ready and out of the house can be a challenge, especially on picture day. But if we could aim to be on time, it’ll help ensure we have enough time for your session. Sometimes, there might be sessions scheduled after yours, and we wouldn’t want to cut into anyone’s magic moment.
