If you’re looking for a colorful, quirky, and totally one-of-a-kind spot for family photos—this is it. Broad Ripple’s Flower Alley is full of charm, art, and little surprises. I recently did a session here and couldn’t stop smiling behind the camera.
Here are 10 fun facts that make this spot so special:
1. It started with just four murals.
Back in 2019, two neighbors had a wild idea—turn their alley into a public art space. Artist Jules Muck painted four bright floral murals and started something magical.
2. It’s tucked away but easy to find.
Flower Alley runs between Carrollton and Guilford Avenues along 61st Street in Broad Ripple. Blink and you might miss it—but it’s worth slowing down for. Even if you aren’t up for family pictures, it’s still a local must-see. Take a walk, enjoy the murals, and leave inspired.
3. The art isn’t just pretty—it’s inspiring.
Each mural carries a message. “Be Free.” “Be Joyful.” “Be Brave.” You can’t walk through without feeling a little lift. The bold colors and uplifting words make it a place that sparks creativity and good energy—for kids, adults, and even photographers like me.
4. It’s constantly growing.
There are now 29 murals lining garages, fences, and alley walls. Some are simple. Some are wild. All are photo-worthy.
5. The lighting is shockingly good.
The narrow layout gives soft, even light—perfect for portraits. Lighting is best about 30 minutes after sunrise, when the colors pop and shadows stay soft. No harsh light, just bold walls and happy faces.
6. It’s a family-friendly hidden gem.
There’s no traffic, no loud distractions, and plenty of space for kids to explore while we snap away. Even toddlers love it here.
7. Local artists keep adding to it.
Though it began with a single artist, more creators have joined in—including Broad Ripple locals. The alley is always evolving.
8. There are live events, too.
Starting in Fall 2020, the alley began hosting Spring and Fall Revivals—free live music events organized by local musician Jim Korn. Bring a chair, grab a bite, and enjoy art and music in one place. (Even better if you happen to catch one during a session!)
9. The alley now has its own street sign.
Yes, it’s officially called “Flower Alley.” Look for the sign so you don’t miss your turn—it’s become a Broad Ripple landmark.
10. You’ll never get the same photo twice.
Murals change, flowers bloom, new art pops up—it’s the kind of location that stays fresh no matter how many times you visit.
Whether you’re booking family photos in Indianapolis, senior portraits, or just want a fun afternoon walk, Flower Alley is worth checking out. I’ve done several sessions here, and every one has been different. It’s bold. It’s local. And it’s packed with inspiration.
