There is always a reason to wait.
Life is busy. The kids are wild. You want to lose ten pounds. You need new outfits. Work is stressful. Someone has a runny nose. The toddler skipped their nap. And sometimes, you may wonder if your family looks the way a “family photo” is supposed to look.
But after more than 15 years of photographing families around Indianapolis, Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield, and Brownsburg, I can tell you this with confidence – almost nobody regrets taking the photos. The regret usually comes from waiting too long.
Your family does not need to look like anyone else’s to be worth documenting. Divorced parents, blended families, two moms, two dads, single parents, grandparents helping raise the kids, bonus kids, or whatever beautiful mix makes up your home – it all counts. If your people love each other, show up for each other, and belong to each other, that is worth remembering.
The images in this post are from my spring mini sessions, and they are such a good reminder that every family has its own rhythm, personality, and story. So if you’ve been putting off family pictures, maternity photos, newborn images, or milestone sessions for your kids, here are 15 reasons to finally book the photo shoot.
1. Your Kids Are Changing Faster Than You Realize
You see them every day, so the changes feel gradual. Then suddenly their baby cheeks are gone, their voice changes, or they stop reaching for your hand. Professional family photos freeze the little details before they disappear.
2. There Will Never Be a “Perfect” Time
Life does not suddenly become calm and organized with perfectly behaved children. Families are busy. Kids are unpredictable. That’s normal. You do not need a perfect season of life to book family pictures.
3. Your Family Does Not Have to Look Traditional
Family can look so many different ways. Divorced parents, blended families, two moms, two dads, single parents, grandparents, bonus parents, and chosen family all deserve to be photographed. There is no one right way for a family to look, and there is no rule that says your photos only matter if your family fits into one specific box.
4. Your Children Deserve Photos With You In Them
Moms especially are usually the ones taking the pictures instead of being in them. Years from now, your kids will not care what you weighed or whether your hair cooperated. They will care that you were there.
5. The Chaos Is Part of the Story
Some of my favorite images happen between the “perfect” moments. The giggles, the toddler running away, the sibling hugs, and the wild personalities are often the parts families love most later.
6. You Will Never Regret Having Too Many Photos
I have never had a client tell me they regretted documenting their family. Not once. These are the images that only become more important with time.
7. Your Kids Won’t Stay Little Forever
The hard seasons feel endless when you’re in them, but then suddenly your baby is in kindergarten. Your toddler can say full sentences. Your child stops asking to be carried. The seasons change quickly, even when the days feel long.
8. Professional Family Photos Matter More Over Time
Right now, the pictures may feel like “just photos,” but over the years, they become part of your family history. They become the images your kids pull out years from now to remember what this season looked like.
9. You Don’t Need to “Fix” Yourself First
You do not need to lose weight first. You do not need veneers, extensions, Botox, or a whole new wardrobe. Your family already sees you as home, and that matters more than anything you think needs fixing.
10. Your Phone Camera Is Not the Same
Phone photos absolutely matter. I take thousands myself. But professional family photography hits differently because the lighting, connection, emotion, and quality help tell the story in a deeper way.
11. Your Kids Will Love Looking Back at These
Children love seeing themselves with the people who love them most. Photos help them remember their childhood and the people who shaped it.
12. Memories Fade More Than You Think
You think you’ll remember the tiny curls, the way they fit on your hip, or the gap-toothed smile forever, but details fade with time. Photos help hold onto those pieces.
13. It Does Not Have to Be Stressful
One of the biggest things I hear after sessions is, “That was way easier than I expected.” You do not need perfectly behaved kids for beautiful family pictures. I’ve seen it all, and I promise we can still make something beautiful.
14. The Everyday Moments Are Worth Celebrating
You do not need a huge milestone to justify booking a family photo session. Ordinary life is worth documenting too, because someday it will not feel ordinary at all.
15. Because This Season Matters Too
Even if life feels messy, even if you’re exhausted, even if your kids are climbing the walls, and even if your family looks different than the family you imagined years ago, this version of your family deserves to be remembered.
So book the photo shoot. Not because everything is perfect, but because this life, exactly as it is right now, is worth holding onto.
