When should you schedule professional pictures during your baby’s first year? Newborn photos are an obvious starting point. However, knowing when to return for milestone pictures can be less clear.
My advice is simple: plan ahead, but schedule milestone sessions around what your baby can do. Their age helps us plan. Their abilities help us choose the right time.
My Grow With Me packages give Indianapolis families three or four sessions throughout that first year. We start with newborn pictures and finish with a first birthday cake smash.
This sweet girl recently graduated from her three-session package. I photographed her newborn stage, sitter milestone, and first birthday celebration.
However, my history with this family started before she arrived. Her older sister also completed a Grow With Me package with me. Photographing both girls through their first years made this graduation especially special.

Your Baby’s First-Year Photo Timeline
Here is how I plan the different stages:
| Session | General timing | What I look for |
|---|---|---|
| Newborn | Early weeks after birth | Newborn details and your family’s first portraits together |
| Optional head-up milestone | Around four months | Comfortable head control during tummy time |
| Sitter milestone | Often around seven months | Sitting comfortably without support |
| First birthday cake smash | Around the first birthday | One-year portraits and cake exploration |
Four and seven months are guides, not deadlines. For those sessions, I recommend following your baby’s milestones instead of scheduling strictly by age.
Newborn Photos: Where the Story Begins
Newborn pictures give us the starting point for your baby’s first-year collection. Those tiny features and sleepy snuggles change quickly.
For this family, we photographed their baby girl alone, with her parents, and with her older sister. Her sister held her close on the couch, and we captured everyone together.

I especially love those sibling pictures because I once photographed big sister as the newborn. Now, she was back in a completely different role.
We also created individual portraits using soft wraps, textured blankets, and delicate headbands. These simple details kept the attention on her little face.

I recommend reserving your newborn session during pregnancy. Then, once your baby arrives, we finalize the date.

Around Four Months: The Optional Head-Up Milestone
My four-session package adds a visit between newborn and sitter pictures. This session focuses on baby comfortably lifting and holding their head up during tummy time.
That new ability gives us a different perspective from the newborn stage. We can photograph baby looking toward the camera while lying on their tummy. We can also capture expressions while they lie on their back.
However, turning four months old does not automatically mean it is time for this session. Let me know what your baby comfortably does, and we can plan from there.
This family chose three sessions, so they moved from newborn pictures to the sitter milestone. The head-up session is available for families who want another stage documented in between.
Around Seven Months: Wait for Independent Sitting
For sitter pictures, I look for comfortable sitting without support. Head control is the focus of the earlier milestone session.
Sitter sessions often happen around seven months. However, if your baby still needs help staying seated, I recommend waiting.
Independent sitting lets us create more variety without asking your baby to do something they are not ready for. Their hands are free to explore, and their expressions become a big part of the pictures.

This little girl’s sitter session showed such a change from her newborn visit. She was sitting on her own, looking toward the camera, and sharing big smiles.
We also photographed her with her sister and parents. Instead of holding a wrapped newborn, big sister could now sit beside her and hug her close.

You can see more examples on my baby milestone photography page.
Around the First Birthday: Portraits and Cake
The final session celebrates your baby turning one. By now, the difference from their newborn pictures is hard to miss.
For this graduation session, we started with family and sister portraits. Then, we brought out the birthday setup.

She wore a purple dress and floral crown beside a pink cake with purple details. Flowers and little lambs filled the backdrop.

First, she explored the frosting with her fingers. Later, she leaned right toward the cake. Those little reactions are exactly what make these sessions fun.

Some babies dig in immediately. Others take their time. Either way, I follow their lead and photograph their personality.
My Indianapolis cake smash photography sessions include a custom backdrop and cake. You bring your baby’s birthday outfit.
Unlike the sitter session, this visit celebrates an age rather than a specific new skill. Your baby does not need to be walking.
If you want pictures for invitations or party decorations, mention that when we plan your date.
Should You Choose Three Sessions or Four?
Both Grow With Me options document your baby from newborn through their first birthday.
The three-session package includes:
- Newborn pictures.
- A sitter milestone session.
- A first birthday cake smash.
This family chose that option. Their collection shows three distinct stages, along with family and sibling portraits throughout the year.
The four-session package adds the head-up milestone, usually around four months, between newborn and sitter pictures.
Choose four sessions if you want another early stage documented before your baby sits independently. Choose three if newborn, sitter, and birthday pictures cover the milestones you most want to remember.
You can choose your package before knowing exactly when your baby will reach each milestone. We plan ahead while keeping those milestone dates flexible.
Can You Add Maternity Pictures?
Yes! You can add maternity photography if you want your collection to begin before your baby arrives.
This family did not include maternity pictures in this baby’s package. However, that option was available.
A maternity session gives you another chapter to look back on alongside your newborn and first-year photographs. If you have an older child, it also documents your family before their new sibling arrives.

Plan for the Milestone, Not Just the Month
The most useful first-year photography timeline leaves room for your baby to grow at their own pace.
For the early milestone session, we watch for comfortable head control during tummy time. For sitter pictures, we wait for independent sitting.
There is no need to force a pose or rush a session to match the calendar. Instead, keep me updated as those new skills appear.
Looking through this little girl’s pictures, I see more than her growth. I see her sister becoming a bigger part of each session. I also see how much changed for their parents between that first newborn portrait and the birthday celebration.
That is what I love about photographing a whole year together.
