11 Things That Make My Photographer Heart Happy

As an Indianapolis family photographer, I get to spend my days with families at every stage. Some sessions are full of cuddles. Others include wild toddlers, silly faces, and kids who would rather explore than pose.

And honestly, I love all of it. Here are 11 things that make my photographer heart happy.

Parents and their four children sit together on a blanket among tall grasses.

1. Kind Words After a Session

A quick text or email can make my whole day. When someone tells me they love their photos, I know those memories mean something to them. I never take that for granted.

2. Watching Families Grow

I love seeing familiar families return year after year. The kids get taller, new siblings join the crew, and everyone changes a little. Getting to document those years is such a gift.

3. Unhinged Two-Year-Olds

Give me a two-year-old with a plan of their own. The running, the big opinions, and the unexpected belly laughs often make my favorite photos. Their energy keeps me on my toes, and I love it.

4. The Gallery Reveal

Sometimes parents leave a session thinking it was a bust. Their child ran around, made silly faces, or refused to follow the plan. Then they open their gallery and see all the moments we caught along the way. That surprise never gets old.

5. The Real-Life Moments

The best moments often happen between the poses. A cuddle, a silly face, a quick wiggle, or a child being completely themselves can say so much about a family.

6. When a Shy Kid Warms Up

I love when a quiet child starts to feel comfortable with me. First comes a small smile. Then maybe a joke or a silly face. That little shift is always worth the wait.

7. Parents Who Let Their Kids Be Kids

Sessions get easier when kids have room to be themselves. I’ll guide your family, but there’s no need to make every moment perfect. Those little personalities belong in your photos, too.

8. “That Was Actually Fun!”

When a family says this after their session, I take it as a pretty great review. Photos matter, of course. So does having a good time while we make them.

9. A Gallery Full of Personality

I love photos that remind you exactly who your family is right now. The inside jokes, the big laughs, and the way everyone leans in close all belong in the gallery.

10. When Clients Tell Their Friends About Me

A referral is the biggest compliment I could receive. When a past client sends someone my way, it means they enjoyed their experience and trust me with another family’s memories. That means so much to me.

11. The Perfect Photo of Mom and Her Kids

I always hope to capture that one photo of Mom with her kids. Maybe everyone is looking at the camera. Maybe they’re wrapped up in a cuddle and looking at each other.

As a mom, I know how much these photos can mean. Moms are often the ones behind the camera, so they end up in far too few family pictures. I want every mom to have photos with her kids that she’ll love looking back on.

These are just a few of the things I love about photographing families. Every session brings its own mix of laughter, movement, and connection. I’m grateful I get to capture it all.
