Stars Black, White, and Gold Cake Smash Session in Indianapolis

Some cake smash themes are bold and obvious.

And some are a little more subtle.

For this first birthday session, the family wanted something with a little nod to Star Wars. However, Mom did not want a full Star Wars theme. So, instead, we created something more simple.

The final setup had black, white, gold, stars, and a little bit of shine.

It gave the session that same space-inspired vibe without being too themed.

A Simple First Birthday Setup

I love when a cake smash setup has room to breathe.

This one was clean, classic, and still fun. The black backdrop made the gold stars stand out. The white cake kept everything simple. And the outfit worked perfectly with the whole setup.

Before the cake came out, we started with a few simple milestone images.

These are always some of my favorites.

At one year old, babies are busy. They crawl. They smile. They explore. They make silly faces. They want to be held upside down. And sometimes, that is exactly what makes the best pictures.

The Cake Smash

Once the cake came out, this little guy was ready to explore.

He checked it out.

He tasted it.

He grabbed pieces.

Then he made a full mess, which is always the goal.

Cake smash sessions are not about perfect posing. They are about letting your baby be one.

Some babies dig right in. Some need a little time. Some want nothing to do with the cake at first. And some end up more interested in the cake topper than the cake itself.

That is all normal.

I follow their lead and keep the session moving in a way that works for them.

Why Simple Cake Smash Themes Work So Well

A simple setup keeps the focus on your baby.

It also helps the images age well.

For this session, the black, white, and gold gave us just enough detail. The stars added a playful touch. But nothing distracted from his little expressions, blue eyes, messy hands, and sweet first birthday personality.

That balance is what I love most.

A cake smash session can still have a theme without being over the top.

Planning Your Baby’s Cake Smash Session

When planning your baby’s first birthday photos, you do not need a huge setup.

A few thoughtful details can go a long way.

Colors, textures, outfit choices, and cake design all help pull the session together. I also love when families share ideas they like, even if they do not want the theme copied exactly.

That is what happened here.

The family had a clear direction. Then we made it fit their style.
