Some newborn props are selected because they coordinate with a nursery or favorite color. However, this wooden box carried a much bigger story.
I have photographed all three girls in this family as newborns. During each session, we used the same wooden box featuring their family name. The box came from a family business and has been passed down through generations.
Years later, that one decision has given this family a matching image of every daughter. Each baby is different. Each session is different. Still, the box connects all three galleries.
As an Indianapolis newborn photographer, this is one of my favorite ways to personalize a newborn session.
Repeating a Newborn Photo for Each Sibling
Recreating one meaningful setup for every child creates something special.
The goal is not to make each picture identical. Instead, the repeated item shows how one baby joins the same family story.
For this session, the heirloom box featured the family’s last name and business history. Their newest baby rested inside it for her individual portraits. Then, her two big sisters joined her for another version of the setup.
Someday, these girls will be able to place their newborn portraits beside one another. The same family name will appear in every image.
That is a detail worth saving.
A Personalized Newborn Session for Their Third Daughter
While the heirloom box was important, it was only one part of this baby’s session.
I photographed her in soft pink, blue, and cream setups. These colors kept the gallery classic while adding variety. We also captured her tiny features, sleepy expressions, and full head of dark hair.
Next, I photographed her with each parent and the entire family. Her sisters held her, cuddled her, and proudly showed off their new baby.
Three children do not always make family pictures quiet or predictable. That is perfectly fine. I keep sibling and family pictures relaxed so everyone can settle in naturally.
The result is a complete gallery. It documents the new baby while also showing what the whole family looked like when she arrived.
Can You Bring a Family Heirloom to a Newborn Session?
Yes. I love incorporating meaningful items into newborn sessions.
You do not need to bring anything. My Indianapolis newborn photography studio includes wraps, blankets, headbands, outfits, baskets, bowls, and other newborn props.
However, a personal item can make one setup completely specific to your family.
Possible items include:
- A handmade baby blanket
- A christening gown
- A small family quilt
- A favorite childhood book
- An item connected to a family business
- A keepsake used during an older sibling’s session
- A meaningful piece from a parent or grandparent
Before the session, I ask parents to send me a picture of the item. This helps me plan the safest way to use it.
Some items can hold a carefully supported baby. Others work better beside the baby or within a family portrait. Safety always determines how an heirloom is included.
Meaningful Details Without Making the Session Look Dated
Personalized newborn photography does not need to include elaborate themes.
In fact, one meaningful detail is often enough.
For this session, the wooden box stood out against the neutral blankets and dark wood. The family name remained visible, but the baby stayed at the center of the image.
The remaining setups used simple colors and textures. This gave the family both personalized pictures and classic newborn portraits.
That balance matters. I want each gallery to reflect the family while still looking beautiful many years later.
Creating a Tradition Across Several Newborn Sessions
One of the best parts of photographing returning families is seeing their stories grow.
I first met this family when their oldest daughter was a newborn. Then, I photographed their second baby in the same heirloom box. Now, their third daughter has her own version of the photograph.
At the first session, no one could know exactly what that box would come to represent. Now, it connects three sisters and three different newborn chapters.
If you are expecting your first baby, consider whether you own something you may want to photograph again. A simple item can become more meaningful with every child.
If you already have older children, bring an item from their newborn sessions. I can help you recreate part of the original setup while giving your newest baby a gallery of her own.
