One of the first decisions when booking newborn photos is where to have your session. Should you come to the studio or stay home?
I offer both studio and in-home newborn photography in Indianapolis. However, the pictures and preparation look a little different.
In the studio, I create styled portraits using wraps, backdrops, and carefully selected props. At home, your rooms and everyday surroundings become part of the pictures.
Both options include time to pause, feed your baby, and settle in. Both can also document those close moments with your newest family member.
The right choice comes down to the pictures you want and the experience that works best for your family.

What Does a Studio Newborn Session Look Like?
My studio sessions focus on your baby with backgrounds and styling selected for the photographs.
I have wraps, headbands, blankets, and props available. Before the session, we discuss the colors and looks you like.
Some parents prefer soft neutrals. Others want pinks, blues, flowers, or a little more texture. I use those preferences to plan the setups.
The studio images here show several possibilities. There are soft pink wraps, textured layers, a basket, and a floral arrangement. There is also a simple sleeping portrait on a light background.
Those images have different looks, but the focus stays on the baby.
If you love curled-up newborn portraits and coordinated setups, the studio is likely a good fit. Still, every pose depends on your baby’s comfort. I adjust the session to the baby in front of me.

What Does an In-Home Newborn Session Look Like?
For an in-home lifestyle session, I come to you. I bring a few wraps and headbands, but your home provides the backdrop.
Instead of recreating a studio setup, I look for comfortable spaces with good window light. That might be the nursery, your bedroom, or a favorite chair.
The in-home images here include a wooden crib, a colorful quilt, and a blue nursery chair. Those details give the photographs a look that belongs to this family.
We also included both dogs. They appear beside the parents and baby, adding another part of life at home to the gallery.
There are pictures of the baby alone, too. An in-home session can include tiny details and wrapped portraits alongside family photographs.
I still guide you throughout the session. You will not be left wondering where to sit or what to do with your hands.
Lifestyle photography does not mean you need to know how to pose yourself. I help you get comfortable, then leave room for natural interaction.
Which Style of Newborn Pictures Do You Prefer?
Start by looking at the images you keep coming back to.
Do you love a sleeping baby on a simple backdrop? Are you drawn to coordinated wraps, tiny headbands, and styled props? Those preferences point toward a studio session.
Or do you picture yourself holding your baby in the nursery chair? Would you love photographs that include the crib and rooms you prepared? An in-home session may be the better fit.
The backgrounds matter because they become part of what you remember.
Studio pictures highlight your baby through deliberate styling. In-home pictures also document the place where your family is spending these early days.
Neither option requires a particular decorating style or personality. You can love a colorful nursery and still choose simple studio portraits.
Can Parents and Siblings Be Included in Both?
Yes. My full studio newborn sessions and in-home lifestyle newborn sessions include parents and siblings.
The studio photographs here include close moments between a mother and her baby. Meanwhile, the in-home images show parents holding their newborn together and individually.
You do not have to choose an in-home session to get photographs of your connection with your baby. Those images matter in both settings.
If you have a toddler, think about what helps them settle in. Some children are comfortable in familiar surroundings. Others enjoy visiting somewhere new.
Either way, I adjust to your children. They do not need to cooperate perfectly for us to create meaningful family pictures.

Does My Home Need to Look Perfect?
No. You do not need to clean the entire house or finish every nursery project before I arrive.
I begin with a walkthrough to look at the light. Then we choose the areas that work best for photographs.
A small section of a room can be enough. Moving a few items off a nightstand or chair can also make a difference.
However, your home will appear in the photographs. If you prefer a completely simple backdrop, the studio gives you that option.
If lighting is your biggest concern, send me pictures of the rooms you are considering. We can talk through the possibilities before your session.

Which Option Is Easier After Having a Baby?
This answer is different for every family.
An in-home session means you do not have to pack the diaper bag or load everyone into the car. Your feeding supplies, extra clothes, and familiar spaces are nearby.
On the other hand, coming to the studio means you do not have to prepare any rooms. Once you arrive, the photography space is ready.
Some parents appreciate staying home. Others appreciate handing the session details over to me in a separate space.
Think about which task sounds more manageable: preparing a few areas at home or getting everyone out the door.

What If My Baby Cries or Stays Awake?
We take a break, offer comfort, and adjust.
That is true whether I am photographing your baby at home or in the studio. Feeding, diaper changes, and soothing are part of newborn sessions.
Sleepy babies may settle into certain studio poses more easily. However, I cannot promise a specific pose or expression.
At home, awake moments can fit naturally into pictures of you holding your baby. They can work beautifully in the studio, too.
You do not need to choose a session based on whether you think your newborn will sleep perfectly.
How Do I Choose Between Studio and In-Home Newborn Photography?
I would choose the studio if you want styled baby portraits, coordinated props, and backgrounds separate from your home.
I would choose an in-home session if you want your nursery, familiar spaces, and life at home included in the photographs.
