As an Indianapolis newborn photographer, this is one of the most common questions I hear.
And honestly, it is a great one.
Before every Indianapolis newborn photography session, I send a detailed prep packet.
It includes tips to help your baby arrive relaxed and ready to settle.
Those steps can help sessions move smoothly and efficiently.
That said, babies are babies.
Sometimes they do everything “right” and still stay wide awake.
And that is completely okay.
In this recent Indianapolis newborn photography session, baby arrived alert and curious.
They needed extra feeding, cuddling, and time to settle.
So, we slowed things down.
I build time like this into every newborn session.
There is never a rush.
There is never pressure to force sleep.
If a baby is awake but calm, I work with that.
If a baby needs another feeding, we pause.
If a baby needs to be held, we wait.
I only photograph babies when they are settled.
That means no crying and no distress.
The goal is never to push a baby past their limit.
Awake moments can actually be a gift.
Bright eyes.
Tiny expressions.
Sweet stretches and quiet connection.
Those images often become parent favorites.
I also bring a lot of patience to every session.
More patience than the baby has, honestly.
I have plenty of soothing tools and techniques to help babies relax, even briefly.
Sometimes that calm window is short.
Sometimes it lasts longer than expected.
Either way, it is enough.
As an Indianapolis newborn photographer, adapting to your baby is part of my job.
Every baby is different.
Every session is different.
If your newborn does not sleep during their photography session, nothing is ruined.
We simply adjust.
And we still create beautiful images you will love.
That flexibility is built into every Indianapolis newborn photography experience I offer.
