If you love having a plan, this is where timing matters most. I keep cake smash sessions simple for you, but they do need a little lead time.
Book at Least 3 Weeks in Advance
I require a minimum of three weeks’ notice. That’s the baseline.
About three weeks before your session, I ask for two things:
- Your baby’s outfit
- A theme or general direction
From there, I take over. I design a custom setup and order a cake that fits your session. This is how everything looks cohesive without you having to manage the details.
Best Timing Around Baby’s First Birthday
I usually recommend scheduling your session as close to your baby’s first birthday as possible. Even slightly after works great.
At this age, babies are more comfortable self-feeding. They’re also more open to new textures like frosting and cake. That means better interaction and stronger images.
Want Photos Back Before the Party?
I get this question a lot. Yes, you can schedule earlier if you want images for invitations or decor.
Just keep this in mind. Younger babies are less likely to dive into the cake. Some will just poke at it. Some want nothing to do with it.
And that’s normal.
Plan for Turnaround Time
My gallery turnaround is about two weeks.
If you need images back for a party, count backwards from your event date. Then choose your session date accordingly.
Quick Planning Timeline
- 5–6 weeks before birthday → book your session
- 3 weeks before → send outfit + theme
- 1–2 weeks after session → gallery delivered
If you like having everything mapped out, this process works well. You show up, and I handle the rest. I would love to be your Indianapolis photographer. If you are interested in a cake smash session or another type of newborn or child photography feel free to reach out!
