There is something about those first hours with your newborn baby that just hits different.
Everything feels quiet.
A little overwhelming.
A little surreal.
I photographed this Fresh 48 session at Riley Hospital for Children in downtown Indianapolis, and it reminded me why these sessions matter so much.
No pressure.
No expectations.
Just a brand new baby and parents trying to take it all in.
Why Riley Hospital Works So Well for Fresh 48 Photography
One of the first things I notice when I walk into Riley is the light.
The rooms are bright.
They are clean.
And they feel calm.
That matters more than people think.
Fresh 48 sessions are simple by design. I’m not bringing in props or backdrops. I’m using what is already there.
The hospital bassinet.
The window light.
The chair where mom is sitting.
Riley’s private postpartum rooms give me space to move without making things feel crowded. And since everything is centered around keeping mom and baby together, the session flows naturally.
Nothing feels rushed.
Why I Always Tell Parents to Plan Ahead for Hospital Newborn Photos
This is a big one.
A lot of parents assume the hospital will take care of newborn photos.
That used to be more common.
Now, it’s not something I would rely on.
If these first-day images matter to you, I always recommend hiring your own photographer ahead of time.
That way you know:
- the style you’re getting
- the experience you’re getting
- and that someone will actually show up
You don’t have to think about it once baby arrives. It’s already handled.
And for my Type-A moms, that peace of mind goes a long way.
What Makes Riley Maternity Tower Special for Indianapolis Families
There is a reason so many Indianapolis families choose Riley Hospital for Children.
It is not just about the delivery. It is about the full experience.
Here are a few things that stand out:
- Private birthing and postpartum suites so you have your own space
- Room for your partner to stay overnight
- Water birth tubs and flexible labor options in some rooms
- Lactation support and education built in
- Room service and on-site dining
- Free valet parking at the maternity entrance
There is also a strong focus on keeping families together.
Even if a baby needs extra support, Riley is designed so care happens under one roof whenever possible.
That kind of environment makes a difference. You can feel it when you walk in.
The Big Advantage of Delivering at Riley if Baby Needs Extra Care
This is something I don’t take lightly.
And it is something a lot of parents don’t think about until they need it.
Riley offers:
- a Level III NICU in the maternity tower
- access to a Level IV NICU downtown
- maternal-fetal medicine specialists
- advanced care teams ready if something unexpected happens
I have photographed families in both smooth deliveries and more complicated situations.
Having that level of care in the same place matters.
And if your story takes a turn, those first images become even more important.
What a Fresh 48 Session at Riley Actually Captures
These sessions are not about perfection.
They are about remembering.
I’m looking for:
- the way you hold your baby for the first time
- the tiny hospital bracelet on their wrist
- the way dad leans in a little closer than usual
- the moment siblings walk into the room
Sometimes baby is asleep.
Sometimes baby is crying.
Both are worth documenting.
You don’t need a perfect outfit.
You don’t need makeup.
You just need to be there.
From Hospital to Home (or Studio)
A Fresh 48 session is just the beginning.
Some families follow it with an in-home lifestyle session.
Others come into my Carmel studio for a more posed newborn session.
I offer both.
And I help you decide what fits your family best. I also offer packages to include whatever type of sessions you are looking to combine together. Whatever type of Indianapolis newborn photography you are looking for… I can help!
The hospital session captures the start.
The newborn session builds on it.
When to Book Your Fresh 48 Session at Riley Hospital
If you are delivering at Riley Hospital for Children, I recommend booking during your second or early third trimester.
Then once baby arrives, you or your partner send me a quick message.
I come to the hospital within the first 24-48 hours.
That’s it.
Simple. Planned. Taken care of.
If you’re expecting and planning to deliver in downtown Indianapolis, this is one of those things you don’t want to leave to chance.
Those first hours go fast.
And once they’re gone, they’re gone.
