Sunrise or Sunset – You Can’t Go Wrong
Sunrise and sunset both offer that soft, flattering light photographers dream about. But today, I’m talking all about sunset sessions—those warm, golden evenings that make family photos glow.
This family of four met me at one of my favorite Carmel parks right before sunset. Two girls, mom, and dad. The weather was perfect, and the light? Even better.
The Magic of Timing
At this particular spot, the light gets stunning about 20 minutes before the sun actually sets. The sun drops just low enough to peek through the willow trees and reflect off the water. It’s like the whole place lights up from within.
If we start too early, though, the sun can be harsh and tricky to work with. That sweet spot right before sunset is where the magic happens.
Why Evening Light Matters
Evening light is soft, warm, and gentle on skin tones. It adds a glow that mid-day just can’t match. It also helps families relax—no one’s rushing from school or work, and the kids usually have that end-of-day energy that works so well in photos.
The best part? We get movement, laughter, and connection, all in golden light that feels calm and natural.
Picking the Right Spot
Carmel has so many gorgeous parks, but each one photographs differently depending on the light. Some are best at sunrise; others come alive at sunset. I always scout for the best glow, the right angles, and the perfect mix of shade and sparkle.
For this location, the willow trees and water are unbeatable when the sun is low. On sunny days, it’s pure gold.
Final Thoughts
Sunrise and sunset both create stunning images, but evening light has a calm energy that fits so many families. Kids can play, parents can relax, and the light does all the work.
If you’ve ever wondered why so many of my Carmel family sessions happen in the evening, this is why. Sunset just shines—literally. I would love to be your Carmel, Indiana family photographer. Feel free to reach out so we can get a session date on the calendar.
