Holliday Park is one of my favorite spots in Indianapolis! I’ve been visiting this park for years with my kids and as a photographer. It holds a special place in my life. Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities, family-friendly events, or a stunning backdrop for photos, this park has it all. Here are 10 fun features and events that make Holliday Park a must-visit.
1. The Ruins
This iconic feature is a mix of history and art. The columns and sculptures from a New York City skyscraper are a beautiful sight. They’re a favorite for photo sessions and a fun way to connect with local history. You don’t have to wait for photo date to check out this spot. It’s also great for a nice walk anytime of the year.
2. The Nature Center
Holliday Park’s Nature Center is perfect for kids! It offers hands-on exhibits, a reading nook, and live animal displays. It’s a great place to explore on rainy days or before hitting the trails. I take my kids here at least once a month in the winter. It’s a great free way to get out of the house!
3. Photo Opportunities
Holliday Park shines in every season, but Fall is extra magical. The colorful leaves and golden light create the perfect backdrop for photos. Whether you’re planning a family shoot or just snapping a quick picture, it doesn’t get better than this.
This location does require a photo permit. Don’t worry – I have a yearly permit (free to clients) because I love shooting here so much.
4. Seasonal Events
Holliday Park hosts events throughout the year, like summer concerts, fall festivals, and educational workshops. Keep an eye on their calendar for family-friendly fun.
5. The Playground
The playground is a hit for kids of all ages. It’s spacious, well-maintained, and packed with fun structures. Parents can relax while the kids burn off energy. It’s one of the largest playgrounds around! It’s a kid favorite for sure.
6. The Trails
With over 3.5 miles of trails, Holliday Park is ideal for hikers, runners, and nature lovers. Trails wind through woodlands and along the White River, offering beautiful views and a peaceful escape. This is the REAL gem of this park. The trails are the best. It’s not too big but it will keep you busy all day.
7. The White River Overlook
Speaking of views, don’t miss the overlook! It’s a peaceful spot to watch the river, especially during sunrise or sunset. Bring a coffee or a good book and enjoy the quiet. Kids also love to play near the overlook.
8. Wildlife Watching
From deer and squirrels to birds and butterflies, Holliday Park is a haven for wildlife. Bring binoculars for a chance to spot something special! I once saw a deer cross the water within 100 feet of me. It was a moment I’ll never forget.
9. The Prairie Garden
This restored prairie is full of native plants and blooms. It’s a great spot for photos or just a quiet stroll. Plus, it’s an educational resource for anyone interested in Indiana’s natural landscape.
10. Volunteering Opportunities
Want to give back? Holliday Park offers plenty of ways to get involved, from helping in the gardens to assisting with events. It’s a great way to connect with the community.
Holliday Park truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re exploring with family, enjoying a solo hike, or snapping photos during the fall, it’s a gem in the heart of Indianapolis.
