When parents walk into my studio, I want them to feel relaxed. Newborn sessions can last a few hours, and the key to success is keeping baby calm. As an Indianapolis newborn photographer, I’ve learned that preparation and a peaceful environment make all the difference.
Preparing Before the Session
Preparation starts well before you arrive at the studio. I send every family a detailed prep email. It includes tips like keeping baby awake before the session when possible and feeding baby right when you arrive at the studio. I also share a few simple tricks to help your newborn stay sleepy and comfortable once we get started. These small steps make a big impact on how smoothly the session goes.
The Client Questionnaire
I also send out a newborn questionnaire before every session. This lets parents share their preferences for colors, props, and style. When you arrive, we review your answers together. That way, we have a clear plan and strategy in place, and I can tailor the session to your vision. This preparation helps everything flow more smoothly.
Who Attends the Session
For newborn sessions, I allow immediate family only. This keeps the environment calm and focused. If clients want extended family—like grandparents, cousins, or uncles—I recommend booking a separate session. This gives everyone proper attention and keeps things stress-free for baby.
When siblings are included, they’re welcome to stay the whole time. However, older children often do best if they head home after their part is finished. In many cases, dad or another family member takes them home so the rest of the session can stay peaceful and relaxed.
Keeping Baby Comfortable
Swaddling is one of my favorite tools. A snug wrap helps babies feel secure, just like they were in the womb. I also use white noise to mimic the sounds they’re used to hearing. These steps go a long way in creating a calm baby and relaxed parents.
Reading Baby’s Cues
Every newborn is unique. Some settle right away, while others need extra time. I pay attention to baby’s movements and sounds. If baby needs a break, we pause for feeding or cuddles. Sessions are never rushed—the baby sets the pace.
Creating a Relaxed Atmosphere
Soft music, gentle handling, and patience matter. I never force a pose. Instead, I follow baby’s natural rhythm. This approach keeps the session stress-free for both baby and parents.
Why Calm Matters
Calm babies make for smooth sessions and beautiful images. Families leave with photos they’ll treasure forever—and good memories of the process. That’s what Indianapolis newborn photography is all about: creating timeless images while keeping the entire experience enjoyable.
