I’m a little behind on sharing some recent cake smash sessions, but I have not forgotten these families. I loved every one of these first birthday sessions, and I wanted to finally share a few of them here.
Each baby brought a different personality to the studio. Some babies jumped right into the cake. Others took time to explore the frosting, decorations, and new surroundings. Every reaction gave us something worth photographing.
If you are looking for first birthday cake smash theme ideas in Indianapolis, these five recent sessions offer several directions. I photographed floral, garden-inspired, neutral, purple, and pink birthday setups in my Indianapolis studio.
Soft Pink Floral Cake Smash Theme
This soft pink cake smash included a floral backdrop, a small white teepee, and a coordinating pink cake. The birthday girl wore a pink dress with a matching flower headband.
We started with clean birthday portraits before bringing out the cake. That gave us sweet portraits, full setup images, and close-up expressions. Then she had time to explore the cake at her own pace.
A floral cake smash theme works well for families who want a soft, feminine setup. Pink, lavender, cream, and muted greenery create a classic color palette without making the decorations too busy.

Neutral Cake Smash Theme With Green Balloons
This simple first birthday setup used neutral colors, soft green balloons, and a small coordinating cake. The birthday boy wore brown overalls, which added a warm, classic touch.
Neutral cake smash themes keep the attention on your baby. They also work well for parents who prefer simple images that will look good in any room.
You can create a neutral setup with cream, beige, soft green, tan, and wood details. A simple cake and a few well-chosen decorations are often all you need.

Green Garden Cake Smash Theme
This green garden cake smash included a floral garland, soft yellow flowers, and a green birthday dress. The colors gave the session a fresh garden-inspired look.
This little girl had plenty to say about her cake. She stood beside it, reached toward the frosting, and later joined the mess. I love including both clean portraits and cake smash reactions in every gallery.
A garden cake smash theme can be as detailed or as simple as you prefer. Flowers, greenery, and a coordinated cake can create a complete setup without an elaborate character theme.

Purple Cake Smash Theme
This purple cake smash included a coordinating purple cake, flowers, and a sweet purple outfit. The different shades of purple created a fun, colorful setup while keeping the baby at the center of each image.
We captured portraits before the cake came out. Then we photographed her hands, toes, expressions, and frosting-covered moments. Those small details help tell the full story of the session.
Purple works well with lavender, blue, cream, white, and soft greenery. It is a good choice for families who want color without choosing a character theme.

Pink First Birthday Cake Smash Theme
This pink first birthday setup included a pink cake, balloons, and a pink tutu. The backdrop added sparkle while the simple cake kept the attention on the birthday girl.
Some babies love the cake right away. Others need time to decide. I never expect a one-year-old to react in a certain way. I give your baby time to explore, and I photograph what happens naturally.
Clean portraits, cake details, and messy moments all belong in a first birthday gallery. That variety gives parents more than one type of picture to enjoy.

How to Choose a Cake Smash Theme
I recommend starting with your baby’s outfit. The outfit usually gives me the best direction for the backdrop, cake, decorations, and color palette.
From there, choose two or three main colors. You can also decide whether you prefer a simple color-based setup or a more detailed theme. Both options can create beautiful first birthday images.
It also helps to think about your home and the images you want to display. Neutral colors create a classic look. Bright colors add energy. Florals and greenery create a softer style.
Planning an Indianapolis Cake Smash Session
My cake smash sessions are designed to keep planning simple for parents. I create the custom backdrop, order the coordinating cake, and provide the decorations. Families provide the baby’s outfits and any special accessories.
I ask families to book at least three weeks ahead. That gives me time to plan the setup, order the cake, and prepare the details around your chosen outfit.
