One of the first questions I get from new parents is how to prepare their baby for a newborn session. And honestly, this is where I make things really simple for you.
You don’t need to guess or stress. I guide you through the entire process so you know exactly what to expect.
I Send You Everything You Need Ahead of Time
Once your baby arrives and we get your session scheduled, I send over a detailed prep guide. It walks you through exactly how to get ready.
I also send a short questionnaire. This helps me plan your session around your preferences so everything feels cohesive and custom.
By the time you arrive at my Zionsville studio, everything is ready for you and your baby.
The Goal Is a Sleepy, Cozy Baby
If you love those curled up, sleepy newborn images, there are a few simple things that help.
I recommend feeding your baby really well a few hours before your session. Then try to keep your baby awake for a bit before you leave, even during the car ride.
If that feels tricky, a quick bath or letting your baby move around in just a diaper can help.
Once you arrive, I’ll have you feed your baby again. That full, cozy baby is what helps us ease into those calm, sleepy images.
Come Prepared for a Flexible Session
Newborn sessions are baby-led. That means we take breaks as needed.
Most sessions last about 1.5 to 3 hours. During that time, you’ll feed your baby as needed to keep them content.
If you’re bottle feeding, I always suggest bringing extra since babies tend to eat more during sessions.
If you have a pacifier, especially the hospital soothie style, bring that along too. It can be really helpful, but if you prefer not to use one, that’s completely fine.
I Control the Environment So You Don’t Have To
When you arrive, the studio is warm, calm, and ready.
I keep the temperature around 80 degrees so your baby stays comfortable, especially for those simple, wrapped setups.
Because of that, I always tell parents to dress in layers. It will feel warm, but that’s what keeps your baby relaxed.
Everything you see in my work is already here. Wraps, headbands, and textures are all prepped ahead of time based on your questionnaire.
You don’t need to bring anything for your baby.
What to Wear for Family Photos
I always recommend soft, neutral colors and simple pieces.
Creams, whites, soft pastels, and light earthy tones all photograph beautifully. I avoid black and busy patterns since they pull attention away from your baby.
For moms, loose tops with a soft layer work really well. For dads, a simple cream or light-colored shirt is perfect.
I use light and angles to flatter you, so you don’t need to overthink it.
Keeping the Session Smooth for Everyone
If siblings are joining, I usually start with them first. This keeps things moving and helps them stay engaged.
After family images are done, many parents choose to have someone take older siblings home. It helps keep the rest of the session calm and relaxed.
I also recommend eating before you come or bringing snacks. These sessions can take a little time, and I want you to feel comfortable the whole way through.
Real Talk – Your Baby Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
A lot of parents worry that their baby won’t sleep or won’t cooperate.
The truth is, most babies do a mix of both.
Some sleep deeply. Others stay more alert. Both are completely normal.
I watch your baby the entire time and adjust as needed. Some of my favorite images come from those in-between moments.
You Don’t Need to Stress About Any of This
At the end of the day, my job is to make this easy for you.
I’ll send you everything you need ahead of time. I’ll plan your session based on your answers. Then I’ll guide you through every step once you arrive.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You just show up and love on your baby. I’ll take care of the rest.
If you’re looking for an Indianapolis newborn photographer and want a guided, relaxed experience, I would love to work with you.
