Real Talk: What Cake Smash Photos Don’t Show – Zionsville Cake Smash Photographer

If you’re searching for a Zionsville cake smash photographer, you’ve probably seen all the cute, messy, frosting-covered images. And yes, those moments are real. But there’s a lot happening behind the scenes to make those images come together.

As a Zionsville child photographer, I’ve photographed a lot of first birthdays. And I can tell you this. These sessions rarely go exactly how you expect. But that’s part of what makes them so good.

Here’s a little real talk before you book your session.

Do babies actually eat that much cake?

Not usually. Most babies poke it, squish it, or swipe a little frosting. And honestly, that’s where the best images come from.

How many breaks do we usually take?

More than you’d think. I follow baby’s lead the entire time. Quick breaks help reset, and then we jump right back in.

What if my baby gets overstimulated quickly?

I try to prevent that from the start. I keep everything before the cake simple and quick. I allow one non-cake outfit, but I move through it efficiently. This gives baby time to warm up without doing too much.

Sometimes parents want to squeeze in a few extra photos here. I get it. But this is where things can go sideways fast. When we keep it simple, babies stay happy and engaged. Trust the process and things go so much smoother.

How much direction do parents get during the session?

Parents aren’t the focus during the cake portion. But if you want family images, we do those first. They take less than 10 minutes.

I guide you through everything so you don’t have to guess what to do. You’ll know exactly where to stand and what to do with your hands.

What happens if the baby gets messy earlier than planned?

Then we roll with it. There’s no such thing as “too early” in a cake smash. Once the mess starts, that’s our moment.

Do I ever have to pivot the entire plan mid-session?

All the time. Some babies love the cake. Some want nothing to do with it. I read the situation and adjust.

What if nothing goes according to plan?

That’s actually more normal than you think. And somehow, those sessions still end up being some of my favorites.

Are the “perfect” images ever a little chaotic behind the scenes?

Almost always. There might be parents making silly noises, me adjusting the set, or snacks being hidden in the cake. It’s a full team effort.

How do I keep things calm when babies get overwhelmed?

I slow everything down. I lower my energy and give them space to reset. Babies don’t need pressure. They just need a minute.

What’s happening right outside the frame?

Probably a parent crouched down making funny faces. Maybe me fixing a backdrop. Or someone handing over a few puffs to keep things going.

It’s never as quiet as it looks. And that’s part of what makes these sessions work.

If you’re looking for a Zionsville cake smash photographer or a Zionsville child photographer, my goal is always the same. I want your baby to feel comfortable, and I want you to enjoy the process.

Because at the end of the day, these images are about this stage. Messy, curious, and full of personality. And it goes by fast.
