I love offering sessions at Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown, IN twice a year—once for summer Wildflower Sessions, and again in early November for Tree Farm Sessions. The early November sessions have a special magic with golden sunset light and rows of trees creating a cozy, private backdrop. As an Indianapolis family photographer, I have an exclusive pass to this location, which means I’m one of only seven photographers allowed to shoot here. This keeps the farm calm, with minimal crowds, so your session feels relaxed and personal.
Here’s how to make your Tree Farm session enjoyable and capture stunning family photos.
1. Dress in Layers
Early November can be chilly, especially at sunset. Dress warm, particularly the kids—you won’t get happy smiles if everyone is freezing. Layers are key, and you can still incorporate textures, scarves, and cozy accessories to make your outfits look polished while staying comfortable.
2. Coordinate Your Outfits
I recommend neutrals with pops of color, like reds, greens, or blue. Soft neutrals paired with these colors photograph beautifully against the trees. Avoid bright florals or neon tones. Layers, textures, and subtle patterns always add depth and interest to your images. If you’d like, I provide a styling tool to help select outfits for your family.
3. Plan for the Location
Tree farms can be rustic and expansive. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground. Expect some mud or uneven terrain, and consider bringing a blanket for sitting shots. Arrive early to explore the area and find the best spots for photos. This also gives kids a chance to warm up and feel comfortable before the session begins.
4. Use the Restroom Before You Leave
Facilities at the farm are limited to port-a-potties. You can use them, but I recommend using the restroom before you leave—or plan to arrive a bit early if you think you might need a stop. This keeps the session smooth and stress-free.
5. Have Fun
Family sessions should be playful and relaxed! During your time at the farm, we’ll laugh, play, and capture genuine smiles. Whether it’s a short mini session or a full hour, letting kids feel comfortable leads to the best, most natural photos.
