One common concern I hear is, “What happens if my newborn will not sleep for pictures?”
First, please do not worry.
Most newborns sleep through a large portion of their session. However, some babies have other plans.
This is not common, but it does happen occasionally. Older newborns are often more alert, especially after the first 16 days.
That does not mean your session will be unsuccessful.
Awake Newborn Pictures Can Be Beautiful
Awake babies give me direct eye contact, tiny expressions, and sweet looks toward their parents.
These images often show details that sleeping pictures cannot capture.
I can also photograph little fingers, curled toes, wide eyes, and changing expressions.
Swaddling usually helps an awake baby remain calm and comfortable. It also allows me to create several different setups safely.
I Never Expect Your Baby to Perform
Newborn sessions are led by your baby.
There is time for feeding, rocking, diaper changes, and extra snuggles. I never expect a newborn to follow a schedule.
Instead, I adjust the session around what your baby needs that day.
Sometimes an alert baby eventually falls asleep. Other times, I work with their awake periods and watch for brief sleepy moments.
This Baby Stayed Awake for Most of His Session
This little guy was alert during much of his newborn session.
Even so, we created several different looks. We photographed him wrapped in soft neutrals, warm greens, and textured blankets.
He also gave us plenty of direct eye contact.
Although he never settled into a long, deep sleep, we captured several closed-eye portraits. Those brief moments were enough.
His final gallery included awake images, sleepy images, close-ups, and tiny newborn details.
Your Gallery Will Still Have Variety
Every newborn session looks slightly different.
Some babies sleep through almost everything. Others want to watch every move I make.
Either way, I can create a varied gallery that reflects your baby during this stage.
So, please do not stress if your baby stays awake.
You do not need to postpone your session or assume something went wrong. An awake newborn can still create a beautiful gallery.
