A first birthday is always worth celebrating.
However, this milestone can carry extra meaning for the family of a rainbow baby.
This little lady’s parents wanted her cake smash to honor her story. Still, they wanted the rainbow theme to remain soft.
So, we created a colorful floral setup with gentle rainbow details.
Simple First Birthday Portraits
We started with simple portraits before bringing out the cake.
She wore an adorable lavender outfit with a matching bow. The soft colors looked beautiful against my neutral studio background.
This part of the session captured her sweet smile, tiny teeth, and growing personality.
She was also crawling everywhere. So, I photographed her exactly as she was at this stage.
These simple images often become parent favorites. They keep the focus on the birthday baby without decorations or cake.
Including Family Pictures
Next, we brought Mom and Dad into the session.
Family portraits are always welcome during my milestone and cake smash sessions. After all, the first birthday is a milestone for parents too.
I captured a few traditional family portraits. Then, we moved into more playful images with plenty of interaction.
Her parents made her smile and helped her settle into the studio. They also coordinated perfectly with her soft lavender outfit.
These family pictures helped document more than her birthday. They captured the people who celebrated every step leading to it.
A Subtle Rainbow Cake Smash Theme
For the cake smash setup, we kept the studio background bright and simple.
Hanging flowers added color without making the setup look too busy. Greenery gave the floral display texture and helped frame the space.
Her embroidered floral dress brought everything together. Even her bow matched the tiny flowers on her dress.
The cake included soft rainbow frosting in pink, yellow, orange, green, blue, and lavender.
It was colorful, but still soft enough to fit the overall design.
The rainbow details honored her story while keeping the focus on her.
Letting the Cake Smash Get Messy
She began the cake smash with a little exploration.
First, she touched the frosting. Then, she knocked the cake over and started crawling through the crumbs.
Her dad even stepped in to offer her a bite.
Before long, cake covered her hands, dress, feet, and the entire studio floor.
That is exactly how a cake smash should go.
Some babies carefully taste the frosting. Others immediately destroy the cake.
I follow the baby’s lead and photograph every part of the experience.
Celebrating a Rainbow Baby’s First Birthday
Rainbow babies hold a special place in their families.
Their stories often include hope, grief, gratitude, and so much love.
This first birthday session celebrated how far this family had come. It also documented the happy, busy baby standing in front of them now.
For parents expecting a rainbow baby, a professional Indianapolis newborn photography session can preserve those first days.
Then, milestone portraits document every new stage throughout the first year.
My Indianapolis cake smash and milestone photography sessions are customized for each child. Themes can be colorful, simple, sentimental, or completely unique.
Most importantly, the session should reflect your baby and your family’s story.
