Your baby’s first birthday is a big milestone. However, planning the celebration can become another full-time job.
There are decorations to order, outfits to choose, invitations to send, and a cake to find. Then someone mentions first birthday pictures.
Suddenly, you have another project to manage.
My Indianapolis cake smash photography sessions are designed to make this part easy. I plan the setup, order the cake, and guide the entire session.
You bring your baby and the outfits. I handle everything else.
Here is exactly what my all-inclusive cake smash photography session includes.
Birthday Portraits Before the Cake Smash
A cake smash session includes more than pictures of your baby eating cake.
I always start with clean birthday portraits. This gives us plenty of variety before the frosting and crumbs take over.
Your baby can wear a special birthday outfit during this part of the session. Some families choose a dress, romper, overalls, or another meaningful outfit.
I keep this setup simple. Your baby remains the focus.
We may use a small chair, wooden box, or another age-appropriate prop. However, I avoid adding unnecessary distractions.
These portraits are perfect for birthday invitations, framed prints, and updated pictures around your home.
Family Pictures Are Included
Parents often ask whether they can be included in their baby’s cake smash session.
Yes! You have the option to include a family picture at no additional cost.
I photograph the family pictures before the cake comes out. Everyone is still clean, and your baby usually has plenty of energy.
Parents should choose simple outfits that coordinate with the baby. Neutral colors usually work best for this portion.
If siblings are joining, I can also photograph them with the birthday baby during the clean portrait setup.
I move through these combinations quickly. One-year-olds have limited patience, so I use their happiest minutes carefully.
A Custom Cake Smash Backdrop
Every full cake smash session includes a custom-designed backdrop.
I don’t ask families to select a premade setup from a limited list. Instead, I design each backdrop around the baby’s outfit and requested theme.
At least three weeks before the session, I ask parents to send me a picture of the cake smash outfit.
That outfit helps me choose the colors, decorations, and overall design.
The theme can be detailed or simple. I have created everything from sports and animals to flowers and favorite characters.
You can also skip a specific theme. A color palette can provide plenty of direction for a beautiful setup.
My goal is to create something personal without letting the decorations overpower your baby.
You can see more of my planning process in this behind-the-scenes cake smash setup.
A Coordinating Cake Is Included
The cake is included with your session.
I order it from a local baker and coordinate its design with the backdrop. This keeps parents from contacting bakers, comparing options, or arranging another pickup.
The cake is sized for a one-year-old. It also uses colors and decorations that photograph well with the completed setup.
If your baby has food allergies or dietary restrictions, please tell me before the cake is ordered. I will discuss the available options with the baker.
Some babies dig into the cake immediately. Others carefully touch the frosting with one finger.
A few babies refuse to eat it altogether.
Every reaction is worth photographing. Your baby does not need to destroy the cake for the session to be successful.
A Baby-Led Cake Smash Experience
One-year-olds do not follow detailed plans. That is perfectly fine.
I never expect a baby to sit still, smile on command, or react to the cake in a specific way.
Instead, I give them time to explore.
Your baby may poke the cake, flip it over, taste the frosting, or crawl away. I photograph all those little reactions.
Parents can stand nearby and help when needed. Songs, silly noises, and favorite toys can also help bring out smiles.
However, we keep the room calm. Too many loud voices can quickly overwhelm a one-year-old.
I have photographed hundreds of cake smash sessions. I know when to move quickly and when a baby needs a short break.

Two Outfits and Two Different Looks
I recommend bringing two outfits for the session.
The first outfit is used for clean birthday portraits and family pictures. The second outfit coordinates with the cake smash setup.
Limiting the session to two outfits helps everything move faster.
Most one-year-olds do not enjoy repeated clothing changes. Too many changes can also use valuable time before the cake appears.
The two setups still give your final gallery plenty of variety.
Professional Editing
After the session, I hand-edit every final image.
Editing includes color correction, cropping, exposure adjustments, and other finishing work.
Cake smash sessions can become messy. However, the final images should still look clean, polished, and consistent.
I select the strongest expressions, interactions, and details from every part of the session.
You receive a full gallery instead of choosing a small number of individual images.
More Than 40 Digital Images
My all-inclusive Indianapolis cake smash photography session includes more than 40 edited images.
Your gallery usually contains a combination of:
- Clean birthday portraits
- Family or sibling pictures
- Details of the custom setup
- Pictures with the untouched cake
- Cake smash reactions
- Close pictures of messy hands and frosting
- Smiles, serious expressions, and everything between
The complete gallery is delivered online within two weeks of your session.
You can download your high-resolution images and use them for prints, invitations, albums, and personal sharing.
There is no separate per-image purchasing process.
What Parents Need to Provide
You do not need to bring decorations, balloons, props, or a cake.
I only ask parents to provide:
- The outfits
- Diapers and wipes
- A drink for the baby
- A familiar snack
- Any favorite toy that may help produce smiles
- Information about food allergies or restrictions
Please send me a picture of the cake smash outfit at least three weeks before the session.
That gives me enough time to design the backdrop, purchase supplies, and order the matching cake.

When Should You Schedule a Cake Smash Session?
Cake smash sessions must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance.
However, I recommend booking earlier whenever possible. Custom backdrops require planning, ordering, and building.
Many families schedule the session before the baby’s actual birthday. This allows time for gallery delivery before the birthday party.
Sessions are normally offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the morning or early afternoon. Weekend sessions may be available for an additional fee.
If you are unsure about timing, read more about when to book a cake smash session.
An Easy First Birthday Experience
A cake smash session should be fun for the baby and easy for the parents.
You should not need to build a backdrop, transport decorations, or pick up a coordinating cake.
I take care of those details. Then I guide your family through each part of the session.
You receive birthday portraits, an optional family picture, a custom cake smash setup, the cake, and over 40 edited digital images.
Most importantly, you get to enjoy the experience with your baby.
If you are looking for an Indianapolis cake smash photographer, I would love to help celebrate your baby’s first birthday.
