What If Baby Doesn’t Sleep During Their Newborn Session?
—Tips from an Indianapolis Newborn Photographer—
One of the top questions I get from expecting parents is:
What happens if my baby doesn’t sleep during the session?
I get it. It’s a valid concern. Everyone sees those adorable, sleepy baby photos and wants that perfect shot. The good news? I help set you up for success before you even arrive.
How I Help Prepare Your Baby for a Sleepy Session
Before your session, I send over detailed prep instructions. These tips are designed to help your baby be relaxed, full, and sleepy when you arrive at the studio. Most families follow these steps, and we’re able to settle right in.
But sometimes, even with all the prep in the world, babies just need a little more time. And that’s completely normal.
Awake Babies Still Make for Beautiful Photos
This session is the perfect example. Baby girl wasn’t quite ready to sleep when she arrived. We took our time, kept things calm, and followed her lead. She eventually drifted off, and we captured lots of dreamy, sleepy shots.
But before that? We got some wide-eyed images that I absolutely love.
Awake newborns give us a chance to capture another side of them—those curious eyes, the little expressions, and the early hints of personality. These are just as special as the sleepy ones.
Trust the Process
If your baby needs a little extra time to settle, I’m never in a rush. My sessions are baby-led, and I leave plenty of time to work with whatever the baby needs. The end result is always a full gallery of beautiful, meaningful images—sleepy, awake, or a mix of both.
