If you’re thinking about family photos with your toddler and wondering how they’ll ever sit still long enough, this session is for you.
There were cuddles, shoulder rides, a few sweet kisses, and a soccer ball. We captured everyone looking at the camera, too! But some of my favorite images came from giving these two boys room to move and letting their parents join in.
This family session took place at Central Park in Carmel, Indiana. Between the warm evening light, tall grasses, stone seating, and water, we had so much variety for their gallery.

A Little Movement Goes a Long Way
When I photograph families with toddlers, I leave room for movement. Holding hands and walking together gives little feet something to do. A ride on Dad’s shoulders brings everyone close. A cuddle with Mom can turn into a big laugh.
You can see all of that in this session. One moment, the boys were tucked into their parents’ arms. Another, they were walking together beside the pond or leaning in for a kiss.
Those small interactions give your photos personality. They also let your children spend time connecting with you while I photograph what unfolds.

Family Portraits and the Moments Between Them
I love having a picture of the whole family smiling together. We made several of those here, including portraits on the stone seating and snuggled together in front of the grasses.
Then there are the other pictures: a little boy wrapping his arms around Dad’s neck, a big hug for Mom, and a toddler laughing upside down in her arms.
A gallery can hold all of it. The smiling portrait you send to grandparents and the playful image that reminds you exactly what life felt like with little kids.
There’s also room for individual pictures of each child and time with each parent. Those close-up smiles change so quickly at this age.

Our Location: Central Park in Carmel
For this session, Central Park gave us several different settings to work with. The curved bridge and stone seating added texture, while the grasses and pond brought a softer feel to the outdoor portraits. The low evening sun made the grasses glow.
Having that variety meant we could move between settings and make a collection of images that felt connected without every picture looking the same.

Yes, There Was Time for Soccer
The soccer pictures deserve a spot in this story, too.
The boys chased the ball, Dad joined in, and Mom stood nearby holding a football. These images have a different energy from the cuddly portraits, and I love having both in the same gallery.
If your family has a favorite game or activity, let’s talk about including it. Something simple can give your kids a familiar way to play and make your photographs feel more personal.

Planning Family Photos with a Toddler
A few small things can help you arrive feeling more comfortable:
- Choose clothes your child can move in. Think walking, sitting, being picked up, and snuggling.
- Tell me about your child. Favorite games, things that make them laugh, and anything they’re unsure about are helpful to know.
- Leave room for a break. A snack, a cuddle, or a little reset can be part of the session.
- Be ready to join in. Your child may love a game much more when you’re playing, too.
You don’t need to arrive with poses planned. I’ll help guide you and make room for your children’s personalities along the way.
