I’ve photographed this family for years, so walking into the studio felt easy. The girls knew the drill. They were excited. And they could not wait to introduce me to their new baby brother.
When I work with a larger family, I slow the pace right away. Kids move fast. So I keep things calm and simple. First, I let each sibling warm up. Then I guide them into the frame one at a time. This keeps everyone relaxed and helps me capture natural moments.
Next, I focus on comfort. The newborn stays wrapped and supported. The big sisters stay close so they feel included. I give short directions and let them take quick turns holding or snuggling their brother. This keeps the session moving but never rushed.
Then I layer in group shots. All four kids together. Just the girls. Just the baby. Little combinations that tell the story of a growing family. These are always some of my favorites during any Carmel, Indiana Newborn Photography session.
And when all else fails, I pull out the secret weapon. Candy. I keep options on hand that don’t stain and don’t stick to teeth. Sometimes a tiny treat is all it takes to turn the mood around and bring everyone back in.
Finally, I step back and watch. Four kids bring a lot of energy, and that energy makes the pictures shine. Their smiles, their pride, and their excitement for this new chapter come through so easily.
Sessions like this remind me why I love working with returning families. I get to watch kids grow and see new siblings join the mix. And I get to create images that show all of that in one sweet morning.
