If you spend enough time around newborn sessions, you start to hear the same things over and over again. Every baby is different. Every family is different. But parents tend to say many of the exact same things.
After photographing newborns for years, very little surprises me anymore. Babies cry. Toddlers wander. Parents are running on very little sleep. And honestly, all of that is completely normal.
Here are a few things I hear during almost every newborn session and what I usually say back.
“Sorry… he peed.”
This happens all the time. Newborns love being warm and cozy, and sometimes that means a diaper-free surprise.
My response is usually something like, “No worries. It’s just a hazard of the job.” Everything in the studio is washable and easy to clean. I promise you are not the first parent this has happened to.
“It’s so relaxing in here I could fall asleep.”
Between the warm room, white noise, and calm pace of the session, parents often start to relax too.
And honestly, they should. Most parents arrive running on very little sleep.
I usually tell them, “Go for it. You wouldn’t be the first parent to nap in here.” I have everything under control.
“Her hair won’t stay down.”
Newborn hair has a personality of its own. Sometimes it sticks straight up. Sometimes it curls in funny directions. Sometimes it looks like a tiny mohawk.
And I love it.
Those little details are part of what makes your baby unique. Crazy newborn hair always photographs beautifully.
“Big brother isn’t too keen on the new baby yet.”
This is incredibly common, especially when toddlers are adjusting to a brand new sibling.
Parents worry the entire session will fall apart because big brother is not interested in photos. The good news is I photograph siblings all the time. I have a few tricks that help kids relax and participate without pressure.
Sometimes the best sibling photos happen when we let kids be themselves.
“Are you going to photograph me from the waist up?”
Almost every mom asks this question. You just had a baby. Your body is recovering. You may not feel completely like yourself yet.
I always reassure moms that posing and angles make a big difference. I guide you through everything. My goal is for you to look back at these images and feel proud of the moment you brought your baby into the world.
The Truth About Newborn Sessions
Parents often arrive nervous about how the session will go. They worry the baby will cry. They worry their toddler will not cooperate. They worry they look tired.
The truth is that newborn sessions are designed to move slowly and calmly. We take breaks. We feed the baby. We let siblings move around when they need to.
Before long, everything settles into place and we capture images that show just how special this season is.
And years from now, these early newborn days will feel like a blur. That is exactly why I love photographing them.
Newborn Photography in Indianapolis
I photograph newborn sessions for families across the north and west Indianapolis suburbs, including Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, Brownsburg, Avon, and Noblesville.
If you are expecting and thinking about newborn photos, the best time to reserve a session is during pregnancy. I only schedule a limited number of newborns each month so I can remain flexible once babies arrive. I would love to be your Indianapolis newborn photographer.
